CTENIZIDAE Cyclocosmia truncata - Truncated trapdoor

One of the most unique genera of American trapdoors, this spider possess a flat posterior abdominal aspect... in other words, this spider as a flat butt!

All the original specimens from the original describer (Hentz, 1841) are lost [1].   The species was first described as Mygale truncata.  In 1871  Ausserer erected the genus Cyclocosmia and the species was moved there [1].  Interestingly, Hentz does not say the spider use a trapdoor, but the rest of [1] definitely shows that it does!

BLAST... this paper [1] is mixing up truncata and torreya.  still a good resource, but i need to do some figuring before i can properly utilize it. (torreya was described in 1975, the paper is from 1936)

There may be people who like centipedes. I have seen people handling tarantulas and scorpions, but never a centipede handler. I would regard such a person with deep suspicion...Now what sort of man or woman or monster would stroke a centipede on its underbelly "And here is my big good centipede." If such a man exists, I say kill him without more ado. He is a traitor to the human race.
