There are a few members who live in the communities that are affected by the fires. I hope that everyone is safe, and is not directly affected by them.
Anyone suspect that the bug population will be a bit less than this year due to the widespread damage caused by the fires? _________________ My karma ran over your dogma...
I was one of the evacuees (I don't know if there are more). Haven't had much sleep the last three nights (trying to sleep in the car with my dogs), and had lots of scarey moments (when the fires flared up and it looked like the whole neighborhood must have been going up in smoke), but the house (and the entire neighborhood) made it through O.K. My son's Panther Chameleon is not looking too well, though (they are pretty delicate, and I think he may have gotten a bit dehydrated while he was over at my friend Sandy's house with most of the reptiles). The worst part was the watching and waiting (while the fires were approaching all around us), and not knowing what was happening when the cops kicked us out and we weren't allowed back in. I truly wish they would communicate what was going on better with the evacuees. But we were REALLY LUCKY there was almost no wind, or things could have been a LOT worse.
A BIG THANK YOU to all my wonderful scabies family who offerred to help take care of critters when we had to evacuate! You folks are the *GREATEST*!!!!! I can't thank you all enough. Warren not only took care of lots of inverts and a few herps, but also drove over here to pick them up on Saturday, which gave me more time to pack up other critters and stuff. It was pretty stressful, so I am *truly* grateful for all the help and phone calls.
Gotta get some sleep...

Sorry, I didn't make it clear we were allowed back in on Tuesday afternoon (but I didn't get my computer hooked back up until very late Tuesday night -- the kid and all the animals got first priority). We are all fine, 'though I could still use more sleep. I don't think I slept more than about 20 hours total (in tiny chunks) between Thursday evening and Tuesday morning.
I prefer a lot less drama in my life...! _________________ "Tarantulas are friends, not food" (but I bet they taste pretty good with butter and lemon!)
Celeste, thank God everything worked out fine and you are ok. I have a family in Glendale but they are fine. I hope everyone around that area is safe. _________________ "A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on." - Sir Winston Churchill

WTF is this world coming to? Celeste I'm glad that everything is going back to normal. And you'll get some decent sleep soon. And we could all use less crap in our lives. I'm one of them. XD
They are "all" man made fires. I had read somewhere that they figure true WILD fires occurred probably every 10-30 years ...now we have a few each year. Go figure.
Well...anyway... what burns fast.. probably needed to burn. Sad when historical sites, homes and all the animals have to suffer the outcome. [edit: & people _________________

Here's what it looked like when I tried to get back to my house on Monday afternoon:
Those two photos were taken about halfway up my hill -- the police weren't letting anyone any further up than that. My house is near the top of the hill (very close to those flames). Those flames were at least a hundred feet high, and the smoke was visible from Azusa (I could see it from there after I dropped off some clean clothes to my son at his dad's house).
I turned around and went back down the hill and drove about a mile and a half away to Crescenta Valley Park and took this photo from there (and cried a bit).
It turned out that was a *controlled burn*...!!! They were setting backfires to try to create a fire break. I wish they had *told* us that! I wasn't the only person sitting in that park watching the smoke and flames and crying.
But I guess it worked, because everything turned out O.K. and no homes were lost in this area. _________________ "Tarantulas are friends, not food" (but I bet they taste pretty good with butter and lemon!)
Ha! scary stuff ...yep they should tried to inform residents of the controlled burn ...people start to panic. _________________
