I went to Radical Reptiles yesterday to buy some feeders and supplies and then decided to drive on over to the Pet Store just around the corner, Pet City.
I saw that they had a rosie with a tank setup a few months ago and I thought I'd come in and give them a lowball offer if they still had it. They didn't have the setup, but they did have two male rosies in the same tank with a divider right down the middle. The tank didn't look too bad except that it had bark chips as substrate.
The rosie on the right was about an inch bigger than the one on the left, but its carapace was kind of a dark brown color. The one on the left was had a nice, pinkish carapace, but it also looked like it was peeling like a sunburn. Upon closer inspection, it was missing a pedipalp.
I asked the clerk how much they cost and she said $20 each. I said that one of them was injured and asked if I could get a discount on it. Her response was very .
"Oh, did it get hurt? They got in a fight not long ago, so we separated them. I didn't know one got injured."
Then she told me that I'd have to wait for the reptile guy, who would be back in about five minutes from his lunch break. While I was waiting, I took a look at the rest of the store.
The reptile section looked pretty bad. They had a tank with about eight small iguanas (I forgot what kind), but they all looked nice and healthy and the tank looked OK. There was an empty tank that once housed a ball python that had snake droppings and urine in numerous spots. The tank next to that actually had a ball python and it also had droppings and urine all over the place. The snake was shedding, or at least trying. It had bits and pieces of unshed skin throughout its body. Also at every bend, it had that low tire pressure look about it. There were other reptiles/amphibians that had dirty tanks, mostly uncleaned, with droppings all over the place.
I then took a walk over by their dogs and cats. They all looked clean and well taken care of. Then I walked back toward the fish section. Some of the tanks looked like some of the water had evaporated -- about two inches, or so, as can be seen by hard water deposits, or whatever they were. There were also a couple of tanks on the bottom shelf which may have been smaller feeder fish for the bigger fish. They also looked like some of the water had evaporated, but even more than the others. I guess there was some sort of filter in the upper right, rear corner of these tanks and there were about forty dead fish, above the water level, stuck to them. I don't know how long they had been like that, but it obviously didn't look good.
Seeing how badly some of these animals were housed changed my mind and I ended up walking out. Before doing so, I took a look at the reptile supplies and there were layers and layers of dust on a lot of them. I also took a look at their rodents (mostly hamsters) and they looked like they were in OK condition, as was their housing. The last time I was there, they had males and females mixed in the same tanks even though the tanks had them labeled separately, and there were also some that had been injured by other hamsters biting them.
I didn't really notice the prices on anything else in the store, so I don't know if this is a place I would recommend only for supplies, but I wouldn't recommend them at least for reptiles or fish and especially Ts, if/when they have them. _________________ My Facebook | My MySpace
I did the same thing, went to Radical Reptiles and went 50 feet over to Pet City.
Bad shape, didn't bother with the fish but I looked at the pricing and it was high, very high for everything... You could see all their pieces of wood were from next door at Radical Reptiles.
