I will be there both days.
so see you there guys.
I will see if I can get another table for SCABIES so we can sell our surplus????

Celeste
|
How much would it cost to have a scabies table?
Besides selling stuff, we'd want to just hand out scabies postcards and info. Maybe even some care sheets? (Do we *have* any care sheets?)
-- Celeste

cacoseraph
|
i expect i can chip in a little dough for a scabies table. not soon.. but eventually =P
C, we don't have any scabies caresheets but i would really like to get some!
i have an idea though. for centipedes i made two pretty nice and in depth care sheets. one for "less moist" and one for "more moist". i think we could do a basic caresheet for each "type" of animal instead of a caresheet for each species. this would eliminate a lot of redundancy and allow us to put a lot more effort into the care sheets we do produce. i am going to make another thread so we don't crap up this one... but i would really like to explore this more

Well any caresheets I will be including will be doubled SCABIES/ScorpionForum. I'm trying to keep mine exclsuive but have donated some to TarantulaKing and the VenomList.

Well if we can get a table, shouldnt we keep it to the so.cal natives, scorps, pedes, T's, & Traps ?
And try to have Represenetives of the different sp. on hand and try to talk or have lit. about care and conservation of the species?
Just my thought since we are trying to rep. So.Cal.....
|
~Abyss~
|
thats what I'm talking about I making caresheets on scorpions but only natives. Well I have non-native caresheets as well.
-Eddy
|
cacoseraph
|
if not ONLY so cal stuff, at least the vast majority.
very cool idea
of course, we need to make sure we have a decent sampling of stuff. and also... we should probably have pictures of the bugs so that people can see details and what not instead of 16 empty cages with trapdoors or centipede burrow holes in them =P
|
What
|
If you are planning on doing this PLEASE call and talk to fish and game first.
In California you have to have all kinds of permits to sell native amphibians/reptiles. Hopefully inverts are fair game, but still it would suck to have a nice big fine for selling some bugs...
|
cacoseraph
|
i don't *think* warren is talking about selling CA natives at this time and i know i am not
but yes, we definitely need to cover legal bases one we have some offspring to start selling
and in all my scouring of the stupid CA fish & game i have never found anything about collecting or selling inverts. they don't even classify them as animals, from what i can gather
|
WBurke17
|
Thats correct just having examples for showing. could split the table and have stuff for sale w/ Frisco
This is also a good place to show support IF we had some shirts to wear (Appx. 2 months to work on this)
Dave, your bro ever come up w/ some designs?

I have come to the same conclusion, but as soon as they find people selling them to the general public in an open setting there will be regulations drawn up and possibly even bag limits set.
|

not necesarily a bad thing.
of course, if they start regulating the captive production as they do i will be a little annoyed. and by little annoyed i mean frothing mad.

Francisco,
let me know if you need anything from me.
There's so much else we could do (if only we didn't have to work our day jobs!) Like, posters would be cool, too. I have a big fold-out one on Corucia I made for the SWHS show.

Hello ALl,
We will discuss this, with more detail at the BBBQ. The more prepared we get there the better.
After all it will be an educational table, I think?????
|
cacoseraph

yes, i think any SCABIES table should be purely educational at this juncture
i would like to establish us as an educational resource rather than animal dealers, for sure!
of course... i do have plans for scabies and CA natives

Hello ALl,
I contacted Ken and gave him my friends number so he can get a table at this coming show.
Perhaps this would be a good chance to invite many of the BATS people, so we can get to know them.
I was thinking that we can also plan on attending shows in Sacramento and set up a scabies table as well as a section to sell something.

I'll be there on Saturday, but not on Sunday.
I can bring my S. polymorpha giant for display on Saturday.
|
Celeste
|
Warren and Nesh: will you be there all day (Nesh on Saturday, and Warren on Sunday)? The show runs from 10 am to 5 pm each day. It would be nice if we can set up a schedule and get folks to commit to staffing the table for a block of time (at least two people at all times -- preferably three, 'cause there is going to be a mob of people there, and we don't want anyone's bugs "walking off"...) 'Cisco will be busy with his own table.
Andrew: are you going to be there both Saturday and Sunday? All day both days?
I would sure like to take off either Saturday afternoon or Sunday afternoon if possible (and not have to be there the entire time both days).
Staffing the Table (need at least two people at all times):
Friday setup: ??? (I'm not sure that we really have all that much to set up).
Saturday: Andrew, Nesh, & Celeste (a.m.)
Sunday: Andrew, Warren, & Celeste
Anyone else care to help out (especially Saturday afternoon)?
What people are bringing:
Inverts:
Celeste: Tiger Hisser roaches (ever popular), and a Flat Rock scorpion. Maybe a Dead Leaf mantis and some Tailless Whipscorpions.
Nesh: S. polymorpha on Saturday only.
Andrew: ?
Warren: 4 or 5 different sp. of millipedes, H. venatorias, and a wolf spider from las Vegas (Sunday only)
Pulk: Solifugid? (Both days?)
What: 3 different color forms of SoCal Ts and large millis, and a couple pococki, plus substrate
Francisco: Kritter Keepers and any other inverts we request in advance
Other stuff:
Celeste: the folding display posterboard and the scabies cards.
Andrew: caresheets and handouts...?
Nesh?
Warren?
Anyone else? Just let me know and I can edit this post to keep track of who is bringing what.

yeah, that's my brother, Anthony.
i was thinking... maybe for anything that tends to hide we can also bring a picture of the actual critter to tape to the cage.
also, i make spartan display cages for the bugs i bring... like ~1/2" coco fiber substrate only. so that way the bug can't really get out of view. i wouldn't do this for high stress bugs though

Nesh: will you be there all day on Saturday? The show runs from 10 am to 5 pm each day. (Warren said he'd be there all day on Sunday).
Andrew: are you going to be there both Saturday and Sunday? All day both days?
ZombieDan: are you offering to help staff the table on Saturday? (It would be great if you could be there in the afternoon on Saturday, say from 1:00-5:00).
And I plan to be there 9:15 am - 1:00 pm Saturday and probably all day Sunday.
As far as critters go, some general suggestions: don't bring anything 1) really valuable, or 2) delicate or likely to get stressed-out. And 3) don't bring anything in a really small container. This Show is generally *packed* (I'm talking *rows* of people in front of each table), and it's mostly just the general public. So there is a chance that things could "disappear" if we aren't vigilant. And it may be difficult to prevent animals from getting jostled...

Hi, folks
we have two huge tables right inside the door near the gift shop (Table 21)! Francisco is at Table 43. We have *tons* of room (twice as much as we had at Eaton Canyon), so feel free to bring stuff to display. There is also protected space behind our table where we can put stuff if we have too much.
Francisco has everyone else's badges and parking permits, so contact him. He will be there at 8 am tomorrow. I should be there ~9:15-9:30.
I bought two more of those posterboards if you have stuff you want to display. But the store only had yellow and red. I'll bring 'em tomorrow. I left the removeable tape there at our table on a chair.
It is *chilly* in the museum -- be prepared. And bring your cameras!
It's gonna be crazy.

Drove in and caught Celeste and Andrew getting ready for the big event.
Ever since scabies was bumped up to cult status the police always send a squad car. Just in case there is trouble again.
First off a little poison from the bugfair sponsor...
Plenty of things to do if you dont really care for bugs...
Some of these pinned bug collectors go too far IMHO.
SCABIES had a tough spot. The competition was fierce. I was worried because across from the scabies table was this poorly lit rock display. My fears were unfounded though. Very few people were checking out the rocks ..and IMO, the scabies table was at the very least a small factor in this.
Celeste brain washing a future cult member.
Some bugs!
Just a few words regarding some of you dealers.
Overall Crazy Dave did OK, but he could have sold much more. The customers were there, but his desperate, angry, unyielding attitude drove many away.
Ken the Bug Guy on the other hand demonstrated a much more positive and productive salesmanship style. Ken told me he just follows the old school basics ..."the customer is always right, honesty is the best policy, sell with a smile on your face, and that its better to gain future customers with great deals over making the quick buck." I asked him what he thought of his competition. "Most of them are good guys." He replied.
Anyway... I had a good time. Got distracted enough to have missed at least one important person/table. Farting around with the new camera so much that I dont think I took a single good pic. Could have used my cell phone camera.
Happiness is but a Death Stalker away...

Another great day today! It was *insanely* busy. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera, but I borrowed Andrew's and took a few pictures of the crowds. So we'll have to wait for Andrew to upload them. Lots and lots and lots of kids and families. My bugs are SO TIRED! They got handled so much! We handed out *hundreds* of business cards.
Nesh: I didn't do that much. It was all thanks to Francisco that we had the tables. I just brought a few bugs and had fun!

Yeah it was fun. I was there for a lil while and it was very rewarding. All the brave kids were very intrigued. The millipedes and cave spiders sold out from what I was told. The Western exterminators guy at the entrance was a classic. I laughed when I saw it but tried to control it since I was in line. Always alot of people around the scabies booth.
Dave did seem a little tense, hang in there buddy, im behind you. The S. terrosus were very impressive. Sorry about the T incident.

Hello All,
Hey I want to start by thanking Celeste,Andrew,Nesh,Warren and Kev. for really showing what SCABIE is all about. I stand up and applaud your great effort and passion.
Second, I want to thank Ron,Kev,Jonhy and everyone elso who kindly helped and checked on me, to see if I was still alive. A big GRACIAS!!!!
from the bottom of my heart.
Third, I want to thank everyone else that attended the show and represent our SCABIES group, it was really nice meeting new members, and seeing other not that new members like Mightygerbil and little Benji, Karen always a pleasure to have you around.
Last I want to not thank Steven for getting no pics of me and my table, I won't resent you for that. (JK) But I do think that all your pics are great.
By the way Steven, I send a girl over to the table, to talk to you as she makes Jewerly out of Black widows. (She was wearing a clear pendant with a latros inside)
When I asked her if she holds any of her Latros, she said:
"I AM NOT NUTS!!!!!!" So I need to know if you are Nuts??????
I think I am getting al ittle bit nuts too as I have been thinking about holding them too.
Well, there is one think I do regret and that is "NOT BEING ABLE TO SPEND TIME WITH ALL OF YOU AT OUR TABLE"
Oh well this is getting to long and
I want to say
WAY TO GO SCABIES, WE ARE IN THE RIGHT PATH AND I DO HOPE THIS ORGANISATION GROWS AS STRONG, AS THE OTHERS,DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST THINKS THAT HAS HAPPEN TO ME PERSONALY.

Aw, Choo... I know how you feel. That's why I love hanging out with this bunch of weirdos. You can talk about bugs, and handle bugs, and wax ecstatic about some really fascinating bug, and everyone else around here goes "yeah, that's awesome!" instead of backing away from you like you have some kind of contagious disease... Here and the Herpetological Society are the only two places where I feel like I can really be myself and feel like I'm perfectly "normal" and fit right in.
(And no smart-alec remarks from the peanut gallery!)
I hope you can find (or start!) a similar group over there so you have some like-minded folks to hang out with (between your visits to Southern California!) But it's really wonderful having you here with us, too!
I hope you can make it over here to visit sometime soon!

I big thank you to my fellow SCABIES for all of the support (except Steven). I appreciate all who came by to say "Hi" (except Steven).
Some of the most memorable moments was the horrified look of people when I told them how I feed leeches (blood, duh), to the several people including Kat from the Lorquin Society, who thought that feeding leeches with one's own blood was the most normal thing in the world to do.
Also, the guy that had previously visited the SCABIES display, who asked me if our group knew how to remove the tiny critters that burrow beneath skin. After telling him twice what the group does, he still asked with a straight face if SCABIES were a small tick-like creature. I think he understood after the 4th time.
Thanks to Karen for helping me out for both days. I'm proud to be a SCABIE-ite, and am looking forward to the 2009 National SCABIES Convention (not too far-fetched)

But let folks know that you could use a ride, and you might get lucky!

Well C,
The reason I haven't been on much anyways is because I suffered from food poisoning last weekend. Pretty bad fevers that had me dilusional for days. I've been feeling better but still get these really bad stomach cramps and I didn't want to ask someone for a ride with me being still somewhat effected from last weekends burrito. I'll definitly be at the next event.

It was a great time for sure. My son & I truly enjoyed ourselves on Saturday. It was awesome seeing all the people stop by the SCABIES booth. Even a bigger pleasure helping out w/questions & getting them to hold the cuddly hissing cockroaches.
All the hard work people put into it really paid off. Special thanks to all who donated their time, effort, and bugs. Also great to finally meet a few more folks in person.
A few memorables:
1. Andrew's quick introduction to centipede handling with my son.
2. Nesh & I having our "David & Nesh's Naughty Burrow" type comments while working the booth (quietly of course).
3. Steven licking the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach to prove to folks how clean they are.
4. Steven practically poking the Sicarius sp. with his finger & it not showing any defensive tendencies (not recommended of course...it's Steven by the way )
5. My son getting a free sling from Francisco as he hung out w/him behind the table for a while.
6. A customer swearing that he saw Crazy Dave on a Discovery special. We answered it was probably on Cops or, more specifically, on Dateline: To Catch a Predator...::lol::!
Thanks again everyone & I have a lot of pics to share...eventually. SCABIES is legitimately on the map people.

Poor Nesh -- he's so excited about that TV guy, and some of us don't watch TV and don't have the slightest idea who the heck Huell Howser is... ;-)

Sorry Nesh, I meant a mention of this. Ive caught Huell more than a few times in the past (...before satellite TV gave me all the "world" except for CA. )
Celeste and others not hip on public TV (key word and most provocative being "hip" ) Huell goes around exploring CA ...like old ranches that are still going, monasteries, natural wonders, other historical stuffs etc etc. He actually loves his job from what I can tell ...and he has been around for a long time ...thus he has clout within the educational/entertainment end of history buffs, academics...etc. Also from what I understand, if he wants to do a story, he gets to do it.
Its a great thing Nesh ...glad it was you that got to talk with him ...besides in some ways he looks like he could be your uncle or something ... ...

Hahahah!
Well, STEVEN said it best already.
Huell Howser is very well known for what he does. His show is on PBS, and is considered very educational.
This isn't a "main stream hipster" kinda show. It's something you'd probably want your kids to watch! Very educational, and interesting.
He did a whole series on the California Missions, back when I was in grade school, and I was actually doing a school report on one of the missions at that time!
Like Steven said, he had a series called "California's Gold" where he would go around California and find little treasures that aren't very well known, but have a significant history or role in the state's existence, and he'd go around interviewing locals or workers in that area. Very interesting stuff.
You wouldn't believe the interesting things that exist -that you've never heard of- just in California alone!
Anyway, I grew up watching his shows......so I was pretty excited to have SCABIES get interviewed by him!
That's a HUGE thing!!!!!
Celeste,
Here's a quote I found on his webpage:
| Quote: | | "We operate on the premise that TV isn’t brain surgery. People’s stories are what it’s all about," says Howser. "If you have a good story, it doesn’t have to be overproduced. I want our stories to reveal the wonders of the human spirit and the richness of life in California, including its history, people, culture and natural wonders." |
That is pretty accurate to how he runs things.
He's a good, down to earth, country boy.
Not one of these Hollywood pigs.

Oh yeah, Huell is awsome. I watch his show all the time and he's had some very memorable ones. I have seen him show videos that other people have sent to him, so hey! ....lets put one together and send it to him, you never know. At least lets do one for us. I mean, someone once sent him a home video of a Mexican Quincenera from start to finish and he just let it run. Totally blew me away. And once, some school project about the Salton Sea was sent and he also showed it.
THINK !!! think about the possibilities.
