Those things are freaking amazing!! What kind of habitat did you find them in? Are they very common?

What ID'd them as A. nephilae.
they're local to at least Aliso Viejo and Encinitas.
i found this one on a small potted agave, not even close to an orb weaver. (kevin?)
neither of us has found any more.

Are they usually found nearby orb weavers?

I failed with the black slings from the sacs you gave me. They fed, but there was a constant die off ..never witnessed cannibalism. but I wont rule that out. The last sling died yesterday. Try, try again ...as they say. I will definitely want to try again.
The brown flavored slings... still have a group of them, though still to difficult to count.

The one I found I observed over two nights before collecting it. The first night it had a web quite similar in structure to a Latrodectus web, except that it had a row of prey hanging below it. The second night it had moved ~5ft and was inhabiting an abandoned Neoscona web. Unfortunately I couldnt get pics of the spider in either web because of my lack of a macro lens.

edit: Johnnyster: i don't know if i ever told you... i'm jacob. but john pulk is closer to something i chose instead of my parents |
Cool.
Jacob suites you though. ...Its a serious, calm and thoughtful sorta name. Parents only get one shot with the name part of the deal. ...maybe they hit the nail on the head?

yeah that would be a great idea.... or even better, one section for a local species checklist/album/listing/survey or whatchamacallit

Found another one of these today, I have been watching a N. oaxacensis web for the past week or so, and went out today to find the spider dead(presumably of some natural cause) with an A. nephilae feasting on the carcass. Kind of a cool find.
