Beautiful DragonflyThis handsome guy/gal has taken up residence in my backyard:
I think (s)he's a "Big Red Skimmer" (Libellula saturata).

Those are absolutely gorgeous. I wish there was a practical way of raising them. I ran across a website several months ago that had dozens and dozens of high quality pictures of various odonata from the US. A spectacular variety. A person could spend a lifetime looking for them to see just like birders do with birds.

I saw two of them out there a few days ago, so apparently he found a girlfriend...

I have one of those. I catch them in my backyard too as I have a pool they come all day. I only have managed to catch one because they fly so fast and I have yet to buy a decent net.
Lovely

There was only one time I caught one of those. And let me tell you it wasn't easy. But in the end it was worth it. And this is with a decent net too. It was a few years ago at camp.
Aaaaaa memories! *Sighs* Also damselflies also have a tendency to land on me alot. Don't know why though. Once I had at least 7 on me!

Probably either you tasted like a bug, or they thought you were a tree branch and were trying to lay their eggs in your stems... ;-)

This is NOT the site that I referred to above but it has a lot of good pics of odonata.
