Why would you want it to???

you wouldn't want it to?

Johnny

i would .....specially if he photographs it
|
What
|
Tried pinching the legs with small tweezers?

of course.
is it possibly the spray is hard to see with the naked eye, and doesn't hurt or leave a stain from one this small? (~1 cm)

that isnt a bombardier beetle... that is why it wont spray. when a bombardier beetle sprays, it is very visible and very audible..... not to mention hot! those things are THICK here. i can send you a bucket full if u want. ::lol::.... litterally.

because its fun! specially when there are like a hundred of them under a rock (which is VERY common) and you spook them all at once and they all 'fart' at the same time. theres nothing better

... must be a "guy thang"...

how did you determine it's not a bombardier? (i thought they could only spray a limited number of times in a short period; could it have run out before i got a close look?)

thats a ground beetle of some sort.
bombardier beetles can spray several times before they run out... then they recharge real quick. ive found that same species of beetle in california as well. i also thought they were bombardier beetles that couldnt spray until i found the real bombardier beetles. when u get to arizona, ill give you some bombardier beetles. youll see the difference right away.

notice teh much more rounded elitra and abdomen of the bombardier beetle. also, they are thicker.... they gotta make room for that explosive fart tank.
what you found is a look alike man. some sort of ground beetle. i could find the species on bugguide. net but that would be tomorrow or something. i gotta get a movie going for my girl.

yeah, i noticed the pictures of bombardiers i saw had the wider back ends.
don't worry about finding the species, i'll look for it sometime. thanks!

man, i dont go looking for this species..... they are just EVERYWHERE!

Pulk

heh, i meant identifying the species, not finding specimens

Goshdarn, they look identical to me except what you pointed out.
Anyways, im not into beetles (not even Volkswagons)

Maybe if you push it around long enough asking him to fart he will eventualy find a way to do it so you can finaly leave him alone ::lol:: Even though he's not a real Bombardier hahaha.

The really cool ones are the "Uncle Bombardier Beetles." They go up to their nephews and say, "Pull my antenna."

The ones here are big and black -- I usually see them whenever I go hiking in the hills, with their abdomens sticking up in the air in threat pose. They're pretty common around here.

Celeste I believe you are confusing Darkling beetles(Tenebrionidae) with Bombardier beetles(Carabidae, genus Brachinus).
|
Pulk
|
your genus may be Eleodes
edit: I've just been informed by Kevin that it is more likely Coelocnemis

Thank you for clarifying the distinction, What! I genuinely thought those Darkling beetles were a form of Bombardier beetles.
Ya learn something new every day!
