Bugfair May 16-17th 2009

Hello all, when is the next Bug fair happening? It's in May, right? Some of us batty folk are talking about coming down for that this year!  Surprised

EDIT; Heres the link http://www.nhm.org/exhibitions/bugfair/
Matt Kogler

Anyone notice that the main sponsor is an "extermination" company??? Thought that was strange, kinda like nazis having a remembrance for holocaust victims... Weird...
ftorres

Hello All,
Yes every year the main sponsor is an extermination company.

John, this year the show is on MAy 16-17, so we will see you guys here.

SCABIES will have 2 tables.

Woot

I think I'll volunteer to be at one of the tables this year. I let you know when it gets closer to the date.

Also it will be the chance to get the 40 roaches that ERic owes me. Laughing
Celeste

It was *great* fun last year, and the scabies table was continuously *mobbed* with families and kids!  Most popular were the bugs we had there that people (especially the kids) could handle.

Don't worry -- I doubt we're going to "fill up" or anything!  Last time we had about 4-6 scabies members there at one time and we could have used more!  We had visitors stacked up about four deep in front of the tables.  I would strongly recommend 6-8 scabies members there at all times, if possible.  'Though during the quieter times you could get away with as few as 2 for short periods.
WBurke17

We also have this event the same Saturday http://scabies.myfreeforum.org/about2741.html
I'll be in Riverside on Saturday and then the Museum on Sunday.
Herp freak said he help me on Sat. but if we could get at least 2 more members and there bugs and or herps to show up, that will help out big time.

Supposed to get our registration packets in the mail sometime this month. I'm all a-twitter... The closest hotel I found to the Bugfair is Radisson-westside for $200 clams a night!  Shocked  Anything else decent close to the NHM for under $100 a night?

I think I might need to have a vendor's pass. If anyone of you could send me the forms so I can have the pass it would be wonderful. I am hoping to actually have a name tag and be there early to set up with SCABIES.

Hey Take it easy Maaan
ftorres

Hello Everyone,
I really need to know who will be helping at our table Saturday morning.

We need to get volunteers for both days, specially Saturday.
So far I only have Alex (a1_collection) that will be there in the morning.

please let me know who else will be there to man the table in the morning.

Celeste and perhaps ANdrew will arrive around noon.

Saturday                                                                    Sunday

Alex                         8am- end of show                          all day

Andrew                     noon til close????

I'll be there Saturday.  I'm not too sure how long I'll be there though.  I can do 9:30 to 2, I believe.  I may stay a little longer.  We'll see.
ftorres

thank you kyle.

I really need an adult to supervise the table and Alex is not yet 18.

who else?
Kev????
What

I can be there on Saturday for sure, possibly Sunday.
WBurke17

I will be there all day Sunday Smile
Celeste

We need a minimum of 2 people at the scabies table at all times, so we need a second person there on Sunday (in addition to Warren).  People can volunteer for blocks of time -- you don't have to be there all day.  Are there any other people who can staff the scabies table for at least a couple of hours on Sunday?  Warren:  can you tear-down and gather up all the scabies stuff and take it home with you if you're the last person there?

Also, we need bugs!  I can bring a Vinegaroon, a Giant Cave Spider, some roaches, and a male African Giant Black millipede.  I'm going to try to catch a local house centipede and maybe a Jerusalem cricket to take as well, but I won't get there untill 11 or 12 on Saturday.  Alex and Kyle:  what will you be bringing in the way of bugs (preferably, ones kids can handle as well as ones that are just "for looking at")?

Warren:  what can you bring on Sunday?

Last time, it was pretty chilly in the museum, so don't bring anything that can't handle the cold (or bring a heating pad and extension cord).

Hello All,
Celeste,
I will be taking all the bugs you saw at the reptile show last saturday, so there will be plenty of bugs to dispaly and a few to handle, if we take two of the handable we can rotate them so we won't stress them up too much.

Kev, I was thiniking about the door price, and it will kind of be difficult as whoever participate will have to be there to win plus we don't have that many tickets in case a family of 5 decides to get a ticket for each one.

Fransisco. I have some pictures of various SoCal bugs. Just PM me your email address and i'll get you the relativity the full size pics for the poster board.

Folks:  we can use as many scabies members as we can get at the tables.  It is probably too late for Francisco to get you in for free, but if you're going to be there anyway, stop by and help us out.  There were times last year when we had six people there, and we could still have used more.

Eric:

YES to all.  Bring bugs (especially ones that kids can hold, but some for just display is cool, too).  Bring food for yourself at least, and to share if you can.  (The museum gave all volunteers little snack bags and bottles of water last year, but who knows whether they can afford to do that again this year).  And anything else you think might be cool.  For example, I am bringing (besides bugs, water, and snacks) lots of books about bugs, and toy bugs of various types to decorate the table.  I'll also bring heating pads and extension cords, because it was REALLY COLD in there last year.  We'll also have poster boards, so if you have any cool pictures you'd like to display, we might be have room for them, too.  I don't think anyone has mentioned care sheets:  EVERYONE:  BRING STACKS OF CARE SHEETS FOR COMMON INVERTS LIKE NEW WORLD TARANTULAS, CENTIPEDES, ROACHES, MANTISES, ETC.

Do you by any chance have care sheets or info sheets about common native bugs?  We could put together a display on native bugs.  I could get another poster board, but I can't print anything out today (I'm at home, and my printer is about out of ink).

-- Celeste

P.S.  To people who are bringing live bugs:  please make sure their enclosures are clean and look nice!  :-)
cacoseraph

heh, i can hold all my bugs, but i have no bugs other ppl can hold (unknown venom, too little, too fast, etc)

also.... we can do a cheap trick and bring a snake.  it will attract even more ppl.  something that i can wear as a hat would be excellent. nonvenomous a plus
noexcuse4you

I'll bring some local species.  A. reversum, S. heros, a couple velvet ants, H. arizonensis, S. donensis, that big wolf I caught, C. longitarsus, and my P. rufilata colony just cause I think people will think its cool.  Is that too much stuff to bring?
Celeste

Nope -- if we have too much stuff to fit on the tables, we'll just keep some behind the tables and rotate stuff in throughout the day.
noexcuse4you

Question - How are we going to get everything into the museum?
Celeste

If Francisco has you on his list, contact him for instructions.

If you're just coming in as a member (or paying admission), just bring it in and say you're taking it to the scabies table.  (The challenge will be getting it back *out*).

P.S.  I'm bringing oodles of hand sanitizer and paper towels.

And could someone bring flight less fruit flies for my mantises? if you have some crickets please bring them as well.

Wow!  What a rush!  Everyone should try to go if they can -- we needed all the bodies we could get at the scabies table.

Check out some of the action here:
http://scabies.myfreeforum.org/about3579.html&highlight=

My favorite part was the two little girls (about 11 years old) who both chorused "Eewwww!" in unison when they saw the bugs, but within 10 minutes were holding the Tiger Hisser and Giant Millipede!  ;-)

P.S.  some of the most popular bugs I brought were the sow bugs / pill bugs I tossed into a deli cup on Friday -- even some of the littler kids who were intimidated by the bigger bugs were delighted to hold the pill bugs.  I think it's especially cool for kids to start by developing compassion for the everyday bugs they might find around their own yards or schools.
Swampy

Amazing - the turnout of people at this show was mind numbing - I tried to squeeze in to say hi to you guys but the booth was seriously swamped and you guys were all extremely busy - Glad to see interest in bugs going through the roof! Well that was a great weekend. My feet hurt a bit now but all went well except the incident with the Oscar's T.

I don't have the specifics of it but all I know is that a person dropped the female T Oscar found and she was leaking hemolymph like crazy. The T died eventually at the end of the day.

I was going to bring it home and put it in alcohol but forgot the little bag on the table.

All and all I got great deals off of the vendors and we got to teach the public a good deal of information.

Thanks for the Roaches Eric.

Oscar was not there the first day. I did tell everyone about the Hisser incident but during the rush some of us might have forgotten about it. I was very reluctant to let anyone even pet a hisser today after what we saw yesterday.

For those of us who weren't there - what happened?
Celeste

I had several kids holding three different bugs (a hisser, a vinegaroon, and a millipede) at the same time, and the little boy who was holding the hisser freaked out suddenly and flung the roach to the ground.  Fortunately, the hisser survived.

But after that I only allowed two kids to hold bugs at a time, because I figured I couldn't adequately supervise more than two at once.

So sorry to hear about the T!
ftorres

I want to take this opportunity to THANK evryone that made this event a total success.

Once again SCABIES shown the public the right way of loving bugs!!!!!

I want to name some people

Alex,Eric,Celeste,Andrew,Kevin,Warren and kids,Kyle,Kitty,John,Ron,Raul,Paul and son,Christy and family, and all the other members

JOB WELL DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Celeste

Paul's son was there and helped out on day 1, too!  :-)
balam

Yeah this event rocked !!!

I did have that one casualty, and it did happen as I wasn't supervising the handling of the T. It was an accident and I think  I've walked away with a little more knowledge on how to handle a situation such as that one. I guess the parent that was holding the kid's hand freaked out and started shaking, which made the T freak out and it ran up her arm. I think we all asked her not to shake but before we knew it the poor girl was on the ground. Her abdomen ruptured beyond possible repair, and lamentably the show had to go on. I'm just glad not one person (public) seemed to remember after 5 minutes, the kids went about their business looking at the bugs and we were able to clean up the floor and get her behind the table in a matter of seconds.

Got to meet the head honcho from the USDA office as well, all and all I think we made out pretty darn well,  tons of people interested in the raffle, I would love to see each and everyone of them become long term members Smile

Thank you all for making this event so enjoyable, looking forward to next year Wink
Ronin

It was a great day for sure.  Not only seeing how busy the SCABIES tables were but also getting to see/talk to old friends again after a bit of a hiatus (I might have to make another thread separately for a brief explanation as to why :-)).

Thank you Celeste for having my son help you out (he truly enjoyed it).  It was nice to see the gang such as Celeste, Francisco, Eric, Kevin, Kyle, Andrew and to meet new members such as Alex.  I wish I could have made both days.

Great job folks!

Ok I'll post here. It was great seeing many of you. I was helping out Krazy8's so I know I missed most of you, it was crazy busy.

Francisco as usual had something I didn't have yet in my collection so I picked up some stuff from him as well.

I didn't get any pictures, but I am sure some of you have seen my post on ATS about the Emperor that tried to eat my finger (funny stuff that), and i had a few other fun events with another Emperor that started juddering like mad on my hand, and a B. jacksoni that ran up my arm and into my shirt.
WBurke17

Yes another fun filled weekend.
Unfortunatlly we did have the one mishap on Sunday and I remember Alex saying something about the roach incident on Sat. But like they say the show must go on. Sad

Karen

I'm glad to hear everyone enjoyed themselves at the Bug Fair! I know I missed out!

Sorry to hear about the T falling.  ;-(  Last year when I was helping Dave at his booth I let a woman hold one of his zebra tarantulas. The spider was a bit skittish and raced up her arm. The woman yanked her arm back and the T fell "splat" onto the hard floor. His abdomen had ruptured and the woman ran off. I felt so bad for the rest of the day as it was obvious the T was suffering a slow and painful death. When the show was over I raced home to put the T in my freezer... But the little guy passed away before I made it into my garage... I felt bad for weeks...

Well..., although I didn't make it to the fair this year, I did manage to pick up a female blue yabbie to mate with my male and a Malaysian Leaf Frog (Megophrys Nasuta). And this coming weekend I am hoping to add a Williams Blue Dwarf Gecko to my collection !  :-)

HEllo KAren,
Yes you missed a great show and we missed you too.

Nice addition to you collection.
Is you M nasuta a male or female?

Please put me down on the list for some Yabbie smurfs

Hi Francisco. After some researching I realize what I have is a male M. Montana. He amongst many other fellow members of his kind were labeled as Nasuta. I know these frogs are known for being sickly (parasites, stress, and what not) but so far my little yellow frog is active and eating.

My female yabby is a tad bit too small to mate so you may have to wait a while.., perhaps a long while... Hehe.  ;-(   But if I get a pair of Lygodactylus williamsi and they mate, I will gladly give you a baby to hold you over!  ;-)

Anyway, i hope you are doing well and will see you and everyone else at the next scabies function!  ;-)

Francisco, purchased a couple of the William geckos this weekend. Hopefully the greenish-bronze female is a really a female and not a young or less dominant male. As for special deals.., I am especially broke.  ;-(  At least for now. Sucks...

Ogershok, how do I post pics on here? My froggy setups are simple but I'll post some pics anyway. Give me a couple of days to do so.

Hope everyone had a nice 3 day weekend.

Would you believe I just got around to unpacking my plastic crate from the Bug Fair, and discovered my UV light isn't in its box.  Does anyone have it?  It is like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Simple-Solu...ltraviolet-Detector/dp/B0002XAIP2

It's 12" long, has a fluorescent-type tubular bulb, and uses 8 AA batteries.
