CA giant centipedes (Scolopendromorpha)

http://www.geocities.com/blight_child/centis/states/cent_CA.html

CA has seven species native (or established) of giant centipedes

Three species may one day expand their range (or be discovered) in CA!

key: if Genus species is bold, then that species occurs in CA. if the name is not bold, then the range suggests the species *may one day* be located in CA

DmbRS = Distribution map, by R. Shelley
GIS = Google Image Search

Order: Scolopendromorpha
Family: Scolopendridae
Sub-family: Scolopendrinae
Genus: Scolopendra

Scolopendra polymorpha: DmbRS GIS
. . . Range: All of CA, except EXTREME north

Scolopendra heros: DmbRS GIS pic1
. . . Range: Not in CA, but *could* extend into extreme SE CA, one day...

Scolopendra viridis: DmbRS GIS
. . . Range: Not in CA, according to Shelley. Their range *almost* touches SE CA, how i would love for them to have spread!

Genus: Arthrorhabdus

Arthrorhabdus pygmaeus: Distribution map, by R.Shelley
. . . Range: West Texas, and much of northern Mexico. i am hoping this will extend to CA one day, too

Family: Scolopocryptopidae (note: these are all eyeless, i believe, and tend to be on the smaller side)
Sub-family: Scolopocryptopinae
Genus: Scolopocryptops

Scolopocryptops gracilis: DmbRS GIS(not to species level)
. . . Range: Most of CA, except extreme E and N borders

Scolopocryptops spinicaudus: Dist. map, by R.Shelley GIS(not to species level)
. . . Range: Large part of CA, excluding exreme east and south... this is your "cold" centipede!

Genus: Kethops (note: still blind... =P)

Kethops utahensis: Dist. map, by R.Shelley
. . . Range: Spotty distribution in central CA

Family: Cryptopidae (note: these are all eyeless, i am almost postitive, and tend to be on the smaller side)
Sub-family: Cyptopinae
Genus: Cryptops

Cryptops hortensis DMbRS GIS
. . . Range: spot occurances
. . . Note: this is an introduced and establishing Euro species Smile

Sub-family: Plutoniuminae (gee that sounds pretty carverniculous... Pluto being the god of the underworld and all...)
Genus: Theatops

Theatops posticus: DmbRS GIS
. . . Range: SE CA, possible single dot distribution in Central CA, possible single dot distribution on a Channel Island

Theatops californiensis: DmbRS GIS(not to species level)
. . . Range: Mid-Central CA, extending to full width of CA northward. Dist. stops ~100miles from N border.

Scolopendra polymorpha
Scolopocryptops gracilis
Scolopocryptops spinicaudus
Kethops utahensis
Cryptops hortensis
Theatops posticus
Theatops californiensis

Of the seven species present, there are 5 genera.  Here is how to tell the genera apart.

Of the four genera, only Scolopendra possesses OCELLI (clusters of simple eyes).
Of the four genera, only Scolopocryptops has 23 walking legpairs.
Of the four genera, only Theatops has massively fat terminal legs and an extended final bodysegment.
Kethops
Cryptops have no eyes but only 21 walking legpairs. It is possible the antenna are comprised of ~10 segments only, all of which are smooth?

To distinguish S. gracilis and S. spinicauda:
Quote:
The most easily recognized difference between them is the presence of complete paramedian sulci (shallow grooves on both sides of the midline) on most of the tergites (dorsal plates) in gracilis, whereas spinicaudus lacks complete sulci throughout and has only small, incomplete paramedian sulci on the anterior and caudal tergal margins.

To distinguish T. posticus and T. californiensis:
