can't decide..Ugh, now I cant decide between a black throated monitor, or a Savannah monitor.
Opinions greatly appreciated.

Never had either one before. Almost had a Savannah but dont have the room for her. But if I had the choice I would go Savannah.

Only reason I asked was because a Monitor is unlike other reptiles imo. Size, diet, and proper husbandry, combined with possibly hefty Vet bills make monitors a bit trickier on the unexperienced hobbyist.
I've read Ackies are a great beginner monitor as they don't attain a LARGE size, care (though care for monitors is fairly the same with most species) and even Vet bills can be avoided (well, some Vet bills) when properly choosing a healthy animal.
A black throat or a Savannah are both really nice animals, and great pets I'm sure, but I'm not quite sure they will make a fantastic *first* monitor.
I've also talked to people who own some and they tell me the Savannah monitor can be as "tame as a dog", then again there is another school of thought, you have to take into consideration the fact that one of these little monsters has an incredible chomp, and the bite can cause serious damage.
All in all I think you and Chase are good care takers, choose wisely, research for a couple of moths at least. Do you have access to any *live* monitors? Check them out, talk to the owners, make sure they are *healthy* (talking to the owner of an improperly kept pet may do more harm than good).
Just my opinion. Best of luck

I would say a tegu would make a great first monitor...even if it isnt actually a monitor. They dont tend to develop the aggression issues that savs can while still having the power and appetite.

Tegu? Really?

I say go all out and get a Komodo Dragon. You won't have to worry about taking care of it after it eats your face!

I would look into Tegu's. But if you're really set on one of those two I would get a Savannah monitor. Savannah monitor are known to calm down quite easy. And they don't get that big compared to other monitors. But I don't hear to many reports on black throat monitors calming down to often. And with there large size, it can be very dangerous. If you buy a Sav I would spend the extra money to get a CBB. As you probably know WC babies usually always have parasite and other heath issues.
