Tried them Celeste? good. I've heard entomophagy is not for everyone but it sure should be. Bugs deliver more protein than meat, or poultry; pound for pound. That is why they are part of the staple diet in many countries.

When I was a kid in Burma (for one year), we used to see the local people out under the street lights at night, poking around in the weeds. It turned out they were catching the local crickets which were *enormous* (about 2" long and very fat). They would fry them up in a wok with some spices, and sell them in the marketplaces. They were considered quite a delicacy (but I never tried them).

The first bugs I tried (not counting escargot, which I have been eating since college) were my feeder crickets. I was buying crickets by the thousands and feeding only the females to my reptiles, amphibians, and inverts because I can't stand the males chirping in the enclosures all night. I found a recipe for dry-roasted crickets and tried roasting some of my "extra" males, and they were great! They smell *delicious* when they are cooking. (It helps if you feed them something tasty like carrots for a couple of days before you roast them).

Since then, I have tried some spiced mealworms Francisco brought to the March BBQ, some VERY spicy grasshoppers someone had a the Bug Fair at the Natural History Museum in May, and the Larvets brand dry roasted mealworms (BBQ flavor) that I bought at the Anaheim Reptile Breeders' Convention in September. The Larvets are especially tasty -- a delicate flavor and nice crispy/crunchy texture (not unlike the dried shrimp snacks you can get in some Asian markets, but without the fishy taste). But they are awfully expensive on a cost-per-pound basis. I even got my son to try the Larvets, and he actually thought they were O.K.

I was very tempted to try some of the Lobster roaches when I had a large colony of them earlier this year (because they smelled so good), but I didn't get up the nerve. (Yet). ;->

That was really gross when they cut up the centipede and cut off the scorpions' stingers... (poor things!)

i could not see this so i will check it out at work. but i assume the topic is Entomophagy - Eating Bugs ? i could not eat a T i raised or one i paid more the the cost of a dinner at norms.........too little for far too much!

but i have eaten lots of un-identified bugs on the motorcycle, honey bees and ants covered in chocolate, oh and snake.

I have prepared both fried and oven-baked hissers. Actually not too bad. Better than I expected. I do understand that it's not something someone would want thrust at them at a party though. The very best bugs I ever had were fried mealworms that I raised myself. I used about a full cup of them and fried them quickly and drained them on paper towels. They were truly fantastic. Sort of peanuty in flavor. I intended to take them to a party to have folks try them but I ate them all myself.
