EXO: GoI: Acanthogonatus (NEMESIIDAE)

Acanthogonatus is a New World genus of Nemesiidae mygalomorphae spiders. It is found primarily in Chile but species can also be found in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay.

Of the 27 species, currently A. franki, A. pissii,  and A. vilches are known in the USA hobby.

Quote:
Gen. Acanthogonatus Karsch, 1880 [urn:lsid:amnh.org:spidergen:00104]

N.B.: transferred here from the Barychelidae and considered a senior synonym of Tryssothele Simon, 1902 (considered a senior synonym of Chubutia Mello-Leitão, 1940b: 3, type C. notata Mello-Leitão, 1940 by Gerschman & Schiapelli, 1970a: 152) by Raven, 1985a: 83.

Transferred to other genera:
A. antillensis (F. O. P.-Cambridge, 1898) -- see Fufius under Cyrtaucheniidae.
A. argentina (Simon, 1897) -- see Stenoterommata.

In synonymy:
A. australis (Chamberlin, 1917) = A. pissii (Simon, 1889) (Gerschman & Schiapelli, 1968: 27, sub Tryssothele).
A. guttulatus (Simon, 1886, T from Stenoterommata) = A. subcalpeianus (Nicolet, 1849) (Goloboff, 1995: 7Cool.
A. latastei (Simon, 1902) = A. pissii (Simon, 1889) (Gerschman & Schiapelli, 1968: 27, sub Tryssothele).
A. segnis (Simon, 1886) = A. francki Karsch, 1880 (Goloboff, 1995: 104).
A. venosus (Mello-Leitão, 1936, T from Aphantopelma=Thalerommata) = A. pissii (Simon, 1889) (Goloboff, 1995: 91).

Nomen dubium:
A. gounellei (Simon, 1886c: 573, j, Brazil, T from Stenoterommata by Raven, 1985a: 107) -- Goloboff, 1995: 76 (but see Mello-Leitão, 1923a: 57).

weeeelll

it looks like at least some of the spiders in the hobby as Acanthogonatus are not.  develops to be posted here
NBond1986

My particular spiders have not been identified as non-Acanthogonatus.

We're just questioning whether or not they are in fact the vilches species, if that's what you're referring to.
cacoseraph

oh, my bad. yeah that was.  i'm kind of busy today =P
Bastian Drolshagen

hi,
just wanted to let you guys know, that Acanthogonatus sp. might be pretty venomous, since the spiders examined regarding their venom by Bücherl (who stated they were Trechona venosa) were Acanthogonatus subcalpeianus/campanae.

Raven (1985) says A. campanae and Pedroso & Baptista (2004) claim those were A. subcalpeianus...

So mybe not a good idea to play with those Wink

BTW.: There´s a study regarding the venom of Trechona sp. claiming their bite causes only local pain... volunteers first Razz
cacoseraph

hmm

like Poecilotheria level?

or Atrox/Hadronyche?

Poeci level i'm willing to chance playign with... Atrox/Hadronyche... probably not
Bastian Drolshagen

As Trechona venosa is supposed to be Wink
cacoseraph

hmm

seems like massive confusion exists.  if someone gives me one i'll take a bite.   i've never had necrotoxin injected into me before =P
NBond1986

wow, and i had my male running all over me yesterday.

he's a big spazzzz.....

the females are much calmer.
Bastian Drolshagen

hi,
as I mentioned: I wouldn´t play with such a thing... besides that I never touch any of my spiders except for my large and calm B. albopilosum females. Since nobody really knows how venomous Dipluridae are I use tweezers etc. to work in their tanks and cricket boxes/glasses to catch them. Most of my Theraphosidae are categorized as "aggressive" - Pterinochilus, Ceratogyrus, Stromatopelma etc. <-- Nothing I would try to touch Razz

The toxin is probably no necrotoxin, but neurotoxin...
What

You have never met Caco.  Razz

He will play with ANYTHING.
cacoseraph

hmmm

fairly mysterious neurotoxin is not really my bag though

it may seem like i play with stupid stuff... and well, i guess i *do*

but... generally i am either confident (from reading as much as i can) that the venom is not *too* hideous or the creature is exceptionally unlikely to bite me

when i can't really say either or both... i think i am going to have to go with discretion being the better part of valor. and just hold them for photo shoots. hehehe
