GBB updateShe has been sealed up for a couple weeks, she has been sealing herself up, digging, and acting funny like this on and off for the past month.
I made her a little den when she started acting like this, and she has been using it. Her last molt was about five months ago.
I really hope she is getting ready to lay....
Thanks, Nick

Speaking of GBB's, that little one of yours I accidentally ended up with molted. I'll feed it in about a week and bring it to you at the BBQ

Ohhh, sex the molt if you can, I hope it's a male. I am pretty sure I ventrally sexed it as a male, but you never know.

She is making an egg sac right now! I will post a picture in a minute.

Awesome, can't believe she is making one.

Awesome Nick Congratulations.
Do you pull them out early or do you like to leave the sac in till later?
|
Herpetologyfrk

Idk this is my first egg sac, but I think i'll remove it after three weeks so I can watch them develop.
Thanks, it was not an easy species to breed.

if you mean cutting open the eggsac at three weeks... well, that was how i killed all but one P. regalis via mold :/

Ouch how'd you do that? Humidity to high?
|
cacoseraph
|
i cut open the eggsac to take pictures of the eggs developing. after a while i noticed a bit of mold in the sac and when i spilled the eggs out most were visibly contaminated. the only one to survive was actually shipped as a nymph or whatever they are when they are still white and not quite normal spider shaped :/
i could probably save more now, knowing that just leaving them together when some have mold on them is their death sentence
|
Herpetologyfrk
|
That sucks man, I might leave them with her longer then....
|
cacoseraph
|
well, mine would have been fine if i hadn't cut open the sac... it is one of the eggs' primary lines of defense for stuff like that
i still think pulling the sac at 3-4 weeks is a good idea... just not cutting them open =P
and of course, some ppl spill the eggs and have 100% success, so it is not guarantee that things will go bad... it just turned out poorly in my case
and in point of fact, i think i did a stupid thing. i had used the hammock before at least once (maybe twice) and not replaced anything. (i suffer a bad case of believing in luck-magic sometimes =P ). i reckon if i had started with fresh supplies for the hammock it would have worked out ok. lucky shirts you never wash = ok.... lucky bug hatching supplies you never clean = not so ok :/
|
Herpetologyfrk
|
Well I'll be starting with fresh supplies being that this is my first egg sac and have no other supplies. Idk what I will be doing yet, time will tell....

Nick, I'm not having too bad of a time with that avic sac. I did notice a few moldy eggs, but I pulled them and discarded them as soon as i saw them to stop the spread.

i think that is the real key... i didn't want to mess with the eggs and basically assured that any eggs that weren't infected already did catch some spores. in retrospect it was a really dumb decision

She was rolling around the sac, and I caught her in the act. Then she put the sac right up against the glass to my surprise. So I got a couple decent photo's. So left it there and went deeper into the den to do some work (webbing up).
Scabies card, next to the GBB sac
Her rolling the sac up to the glass.
Thanks, Nick

Well, I pulled it today.
Only because I had a fly problem in the cage. Also I was told to by Francisco....so it was not my intention to pull today. I had to
Anyways, there was some clumping, and about 20 bad eggs (Green/black) which were attracting the flies I am more then sure of it.
I haven't counted yet, I have been busy separating the good from the bad.
Yes they are eggs with legs, so the sac was fertile =]
Thanks, Nick

Oops, I didn't realize how bad these pictures are. I'll post some new ones very soon =]
Also, these were my only materials to work with as of right now. Only because I wasn't planning on pulling today. I will more then likely set it up with the "nylon" method later on.
Thanks Oscar =]
Thanks, Nick

I am pretty sure she is getting ready to double clutch. She is 6-7 months away from her next molt so it isn't that.
I'll post pictures of her abdomen asap

Here are some pictures, one of my female, and one of the 1st instars taken a day or two ago. Picture of the female was taken last night
What do ya guys think? I think she may double clutch, not only because of her size, but the way she is acting, plus she isn't due for another molt in 6-7 months
::lol:: why does my post above say "report this post" ?? I didn't type that
|
Herpetologyfrk

About 15-20 left to molt into 2nd instar
i'll post pictures soon

How common is "double-clutching"?

Among this species I have no clue.
Not much information about there breeding habits, and reproduction anywhere that I have found.
I am just winging it

WOW! CONGRATULATIONS!!! They're *beautiful*!!!
Can you describe in more detail how you have cared for these babies since they were just "eggs-with-legs"? You've done a great job!

I've not really heard about this species double-clutching but for some reason Psalmopoeus spp. are known for it.
