Introducing a new friend :)Hey mates
I captured a nice grass spider yesterday at work , so today i went to the pet store and bought her a container and some nice fake grass ::lol::. I added small pieces of branches and then put the spider inside . So far she didn't start her web but i'm sure it will come .
I just wanted to introduce her to you guys and i'll post updates later on.
Enjoy !
The first ones are just for a better view of the spider while she was in the temporary container.
Next ones are the most recent ones. I think this is the best spider palace i came up with so far. and probably the most simple at the same time
More will come

That container will be webbed up in no time.
I had one that I housed in a lemonaide bottle that was shapped like an O.J. decanter with long twig peices that she webbed up real good. if shes gravid the slings will be super tiny and can fit thru the smallest pin holes

Nice... I got one that lives under my cpu, and a shrub in the front yard that houses a colony... My house mates used to hose them off every week... Now they can be found hunting flies and tossin' 'em into the webs... Hahahaha converted! Woot!

Hey guys , thx for posting comments
Warren i'm not worried about getting slings with this spider because i took nice pictures of it's face and i can see the palps well on them and the tips of his palps are thicker then the rest and also darker. I've often seen pictures of both males and female spiders of the same species and in almost every cases , the males had thicker palps . After taking those pics and looking at them closely, i'm 99.9 % sure that this is a male. I know the palp thing does not work for tarantulas so probably none of the mygalomorphs.
I've searched for pictures of the different species for Agelenopsis sp. and sadly i only found two different species. Agelenopsis naevia and Agelenopsis aperta. Mine looks exactly the same as the A. aperta so i'm gonna stick to that one ::lol::.
Scott i'm not sure i understood exactly what you mean by a shrub that houses a colony... Does that mean that those spiders can live socialy ? i thought only one species of spiders could actualy team up with others and build a social web. I could've understood what you said the wrong way ::lol:: . Could you plz clarify when you get a chance
I've just finished uploading the pics so here they are. I've also included pictures of him taking his first meal inside his new home. And a video of his hunt but i hate my appartment when it comes to filming because i don't have alot of light available and the vid is all blury because of it. Anyways no more talking ::lol::. Here are the pics.

thx Celeste .
I should have some better ones soon if he can make up his mind and start his web ::lol::. Unless males don't do those large webs. He did make a very small one and you can see a few threads of silk if you look closely and you can also see that his leg tips are not touching the ground.
The thing is that it's not gaining any expansion at all . At first i thought it would probably be his lair ::lol:: and that the Funnel would lead to that area of the container cuz he realy seems to like that spot alot.
Now i'm thinking he's just too lazy Maybe that fake grass makes him feel safe enough . Also the fact that he did realy good at hunting down that cricket without a web. Also the fact that he was a wanderer when i found him. He had probably just entered the building a few moments before i came in cuz he was the first thing i saw as i got to work that day
Anyways , i'm keepin him no matter what

Oh... they're not workin' together, they're just building into each other for a full web coverage look on the shrub... I call it a colony cuz it looks like one... The dude spiders hit that bush for all the tang they can beat!

He just made this little web about 2 hours ago , while all the lights in the house were turned off. He's like my Tegenaria, he only builds when it's dark. So far he's been sitting in that small web till now.
Maybe he's just not the same kind of grass spider i thought he was. Or maybe i'm just not patient enough

Just a little information update, i'm starting to think that males only build small and temporary webs. The container is now surrounded by web but not in the same way as the usual grass spiders web that i see around the house . There is no funnel part at all. He simply switches location in the container and builds a small web everytime so obiously there is web everywhere but built randomly. He stays at the same spot for a few days then switches to another spot and builds a new web.
He eats more than my other pets too, everytime i put a cricket in there he jumps it while my other spiders will sometimes co-habit with the cricket for a few days before eating it .
now thats about it , just wanted to give an ending post to this thread ::lol::.
have a nice day everyone

Got This oneJust got this one yesterday. The storage unit where all the clutter is(work related) happens to yield lots of bugs.
Anyhow, this one is also a grass spider, she built a funnel like web in a crack in between the storage units and was eager to come out every time anything brushed against the web.
Nice size, just an inch w extended legs.
Any way we can sex it w/ the pics?
Just hanging around:
Size does matter:
So whatcha think? got a girl or a boy in my hands?

It's difficult to make out exact details, but my guess would be that you have a little lady ... abdomen looks rather larger & more rounded in proportion to the cephalothorax. Of course, I could be off by 10 miles or so. Anyhow, thank you for posting the photo & info =)

I usualy sex a true spider by looking at the palps . If the tip of the palp is thicker and mostly black, that means it's a male , if not then it's a female. Female grass spiders do have a slightly larger abdomen than males but the size of the abdomen can varry depending on how well fed the spider is so i don't think you can be 100 % accurate when trying to sex them by the size of the abdomen. Males also have longer legs but then again, you can't realy tell them appart by the legs if you don't have a specimen of eatch sex in front of you
The best way i think is realy to look at the palps. It's easier if you take a close up picture of the spider's face.
If you look at the 6th and 7th pictures i've sent above , you can see the thicker end of the spider's palp and mine is a male .
Hope that helps

Female!
I have seen some males here and there and their abdomen is MUCH smaller.
Pedipalps on mine are never charged.
They seem slow??? at building webs. i have had mine for about a month and she finally has a decent sheet and funnel web in there.
very happy, she is Lightning Fast !
