Lorquin Meeting on April 25th Please read

Hello ALL

We have a meeting upcoming on Friday, April 25th. Our speaker continues our exploration into the talents of UC Riverside with Christiane Weirauch. Christiane will speak about: Sticky traps, Corpse Camouflage, and Bloodlust: Assassin Bugs (Reduviidae) as Inventive Predators "Assassin Bugs are an extremely species-rich group of predacious and blood-feeding insects which includes the kissing bugs, the so-called “Masked Bed Bug Hunter”, “Bee Killers”, and “Ambush Bugs”, to name only some of the locally occurring species. Even though some species feed on a wide range of other insects, many assassin bugs have distinct dietary preferences – and have accordingly developed very different strategies to get a hold of these various prey organisms. The production of sticky secretions to trap prey and the use of ant-attractive secretion to lure ants are only two of the diverse lines of attack these insects have chosen. This seminar will give insights into the inventive feeding strategies of a group of insects that deserves more attention. Christiane received her PhD from Freie Universitaet in Berlin, Germany, working on assassin bug systematics. She became a post doc at the American Museum of Natural History, New York, in 2003, where she participated in the Planetary Biodiversity Inventory project on Plant Bugs. Last year, she jointed the faculty of the Department of Entomology at the University of California, Riverside, and continues to work on systematics and natural history of True Bugs, with an emphasis on assassin bugs and plant bugs.

I hope to see some of us SCABIES members there.

Any questions about time and locality please let me know
