MANTID on my Driveway.....gateOk, so i purchased an African Mantis at the show.
Today i was walking towards my driveway gate when i noticed some very bright green and distinct set of legs holding on from underneath the gate.
As i kneeled down i happened to find, staring with two big bronze(i like to call them that) eyes, a large (3-4 inch long) mantid.
I have not classified it yet but i am going to research this tonight.
I can count 5 very defined segments (plus the end of the tail) which leads me to believe its a male.
Earlier on i thought it made a buzzing kind of noise... i may be mistaken
It has a protusion sticking out (skinny too) at the end of the forearms.
I will post a pic as soon as possible.

I have a feeling it is a full grown European or the local mantids. Or did you say it was African?

Interesting a1_collection.
What I meant was that I had purchased a young Parasphendale agronina, and that I am simply enjoying her (figuratively) very much.

Hello,
I am glad you are enjoying the P agrionina.
I think what you have according to the description is a Tenodera aridifolia sinensis AKA Chinese mantid. I could be wrong if it is not 4 + inches.
Update She is nice and it is not a Chinese, but a Stagmomantis californica.
Now if it has 5 segments is female and 6-7 segments male.
I would love to see a pic.
thanks

I actually took pictures last night.
I must say i felt bad because i did not have a very large container so I put it in a small, very small fish bowl.
I switched it this morning to a cut 1 gal jug of water w/mesh on top.
I just got home from work and the jug is missing...
interestingly enough my wife and son are not here and i found insecticide out on a countertop (which it usually isn't there)
hopefully nothing happened to it since i was sort of hoping it would be a pregnant (is that the correct term?) female that would eventually deposit an ootheca.
Let's keep our fingers crossed.... for everybody's sake.
She is soon to come home.

Click the "Post Reply" button at the bottom of the page; when you get the little editing window, just beneath it is a blue hyperlink that says "Attach File". When you click that, another window pops up which allows you to enter the filename or "Browse..." on your computer to find the appropriate file. Once you find the file, you click the "Upload File" button on that window and wait a few seconds (depending on your connection speed and the file size) for the file to upload. It will automatically be hyperlinked into your editing window (at the bottom of the window) -- you may have to cut and paste and move stuff around to get it where you want it w.r.t. the rest of the text in your message. When finished, you can choose "Preview" to see how it will look, or just "Submit" if you are happy with it.

Awesome...
Thank you for the info.
Ok so i got the lowdown as to what happened.
Apparently if you leave any piece of cricket laying around and ants get to it they will not only devour it... they will also swarm any living organism around it.
So, I left a bag which had a couple of crickets next to the water jug.
My wife decided it would be a good idea to remove the jug (with the mantis inside) from the mess i created and placed it out on the porch.
Keep in mind the mantis was still inside at that point.
Well, come to find out she sprayed insecticide all over the place (that s why she place the mantis outside)
Well, the jug itself does not have a lot of strength at the top area since i cut it.
the mantis escaped.
I was bummed out and looking outside to see if i could find it, but no luck, and just then, as i returned inside my wife went out and looked right up at the porch's ceiling and there it was.
Needless to say i switched containers, (i don;t want it escaping again)
I am uploading pictures onto the computer and i will then upload onto SCABIES.
Thank you all for the information so far.

Can you spot P. agrionina...

Definitely looks like the one I have at home right now.
Should be European or possibly the local ones. I still don't know the difference between the two as I have not yet caught both of them to compare yet.

Hello,
MAntis religiosa has full size wings that get even with the last abdomen segment
S californica has shorter wings that will get to 3/4 of the abdomen.

The wings end before they get to the edge of the abdomen.
Probably a S. Californica like you mentioned FTorres.
5 Segments plus the triangular end of the abdomen (don't know if that should count as a segment)
This would make it a female right?
Nice.

Hello,
Yes that is a female and it would be 6 degments so males will have 7-8 segments and be more slender and will have longer wings passing the abdomen.

Great, it seem to be eating quite a lot. I hope it's getting ready to deposit her egg sac.
This morning she ate a stink bug and now she is eating a large jumping spider.

Just a question... How can you tell if a female is pregnant? Or is there any way to do so?

Hello,
You can tell only if you saw them mating (pervert )
Most likely she is already gravid, but the season is almost over for them so she might be a virgin.
so you have 50/50 chances.
good luck.
