Mine deposited ootheca

Just as the title says. My European Mantis found in Southern California has deposited a very good size ootheca. Very Happy

I need exact care instructions on how to successfully make the babies hatch. Smile

Time laid: 11:02 PM 10/17/08

Correction...not sure if it is exactly a European Mantis.

I have put it in the fridge now. I am guessing i will put it there for about 2-3 months then let them out to room temp.

ooh, the fridge might be a bit cool for it.  i would leave it outside for winter, rather than put it in the fridge

(nice to see you at the show and hang out for a bit Smile )

Ok then. Well I heard that the fridge was an option but after looking at the temp in the fridge (40*F) I realised it was too cold. Socal will get hit by another heat wave next week or so and wouldn't that be a bit hot for it? I'll just put it in my room as it isn't all that hot or cold. I'll pop it outside around November time when the weather is more predictable.

(Glad I could help out at the fair)

Some people actually buy wine coolers (refrigerators) to keep their hibernating reptiles or ooths and such at the correct temperature over the winter.  You can set the temperature and keep them at 50-55 or whatever you choose.

Hello,
I think it is a S californicum, but I could be wrong.

If you are leaving it in the fridge the door id the best place as it does not gets that cold there.
But your best bet is cooling it off little by little, they need the diapause period or cold period of a few weeks and them the increase of temps for the ooth to eclose.

good luck with it.

I'll put it in the fridge for 2 weeks then and see what's up. The fridge gets really cold here though. I'll try it out.
