My New Ball PythonOk I am so pathetic....But I findly found a snake that has all the qualities that I like-at least this one does. I was going to wait for the show but I found this sweetie.
I want to thank Celeste for giving me suggestions.

Hello Denise,
I have a female in case yours is a male and want to breed them.

Nice snake! I've been looking at getting a Pueblan Milksnake, but my girlfriend won't let me get anything that eats rodents

Aawww! Congratulations, Denise!
But you can't just have *one*! ;-)

::lol:: I know Celeste. If balls are generally this docile, I might just get another one at the show. I held a baby and it was a sweetie as well but I fell in love with the adult.
I make it a huge policy not to buy from petstores but I trust this store. They are good to their animals and they are clean. I just could not put this sweetie down.
Frisco, I will sex it by this weekend. He/She is enjoying its hide and I do not want to stress it out too much-I'm letting it acclimate to its new environment.

I think the males usually have tiny "spurs" (claws) on either side of their vents, and the females don't. (But I'm not 100% positive).

Sooo cute, Denise! That is number one on my list for this weekend. It is supposed to be a birthday present for my youngest son and he says it absolutely must be female so he can name it Bindi. (He has a crush on the Croc Hunter's daughter). But the truth is, I want the snake as much as he does! We also want a pixie frog and a milksnake. Also a Chaco and maybe a centipede or two, but lets seen how far we can push poor Stuart!

Great! Maybe I will see you at the show! I am looking for a morph BP so I will be hunting around for one. I am not sure of the Sex of mine even though "her" name is Maleficent. Matt is going to sex it for me but for some reason, I have a feeling its female.
They are excellent snakes and I highly recommend them. Mine is very sweet and not snappy at all. She gets a little hissy around her nose-she rubbed her nose because the previous owner was not feeding(rubbing on the screen) her enough and she was emaciated. She is fine now as you can tell from the pics.

Oh even better! I'm glad you could help her out! I think we will go for normal color (not that I wouldn't love something rare), but we are pinching pennies after Christmas and my new car. At least the new snake gets to go home in style!

The one thing you have to be careful of with pythons is that they are not too smart, and will sometimes mistake your hand for food if they are hungry (just ask Matt!)
I usually just keep the screen cage top between my hand and their faces until I grab hold of a coil. Once they know they are being picked up, ball pythons won't usually bite.

Yes,I just make sure mine is well fed. I also tend to scoup them up rather than wave hands around-like you said, they will mistake hands for food. My guy will just coil up and then I pick up from the midsection.
Like Matt said, its about body language.
Thanks for the warning.

North American colubrids (rat snakes, kingsnakes, etc.) tend to be smarter than boas and pythons, and you don't usually have that problem with them (mistaking hands for food)... ;->
I think pythons are like sharks in that respect -- kind of primitive and relying more on instinct than on processing information in their little brains...

If you get a shot of the ventral I can tell you what you have.

I suggest rubbing rats all over your hands then just reaching right for em... The rat scent will cover up the human scent and you are guaranteed to get, oh wait did you say you were trying "not" to get bit???
Dont worry, I'll sex em for ya on Sat night..

Thank you.
Can you do a visual on BP's? I thought they had to be probbed to get a positive on the sex.

You can do visual, but Ive visually called wrong in the past on females that had huge spurs (larger than usual), its best to probe..
