My new hobby.

As some of you may know, I'm severely decreasing the size of my tarantula collection to pursue a new hobby - snakes.  I'm primarily interested in native species as exotics don't really appease me.

As with any hobby I pursue, I tend to jump in head first rather than getting my feet wet.  I've been debating which species with which to start, going back and forth between alterna and suboc and I've decided to get a pair of alterna.  It'll be a challenge, but I'm up to it.

Here's the first pair I'm getting.  They'll be here next week Smile.  River Road locality.  I loooove the reduced pattern and speckled look of these.

Female

Male

These are very nice snakes Kyle.
Are they Lampropeltis?
way...way cool.
noexcuse4you

Yep, Lampropeltis alterna Smile
balam

No kidding, "River Road" locality?
Nice by all means man.
Kudos on your new hobby.
Those are wicked.
ogershok

One word, man: "Babies."
noexcuse4you

Hehe, these *are* babies so they won't be making babies for a few more years.  If I find a good deal on adults, I may pick some up (have to be locality specific though and preferably alterna phase).  Females are realllly hard to come by though because everyone holds them back.

I might eventually get other kings like mexicana subspecies and pyromelana.
balam

I have an acquaintance that gave me a 50/50 Cal King yesterday and claimed he was going to be getting some mexicana mexicana soon... I'll hit him up Smile
Celeste

If you start breeding albino subocs, let me know...!
noexcuse4you

They came today!  The guy who sold them to me was even nice enough to throw in a bunch of feeder lizards.

They didn't waste any time chowing down!

balam

SWEEEEEET MAN Smile Are you bringing them to the show?
noexcuse4you

Nah, they need some time to settle in.  Plus they're really small so they're not easy to handle.
balam

well then you better keep on posting and keeping us updated on these. They sure are beautiful.

Congrats again Smile

Hello Kyle,
Nice snakes, really nice.

Are they going to take pinky mice readily or will it take some time and effort?

Celeste, those trans pecos albino snakes are super nice.
noexcuse4you

It'll take some time and effort to get them on pinkies, but I'm up to the challenge.  They should start feeding on pinkies after the first couple sheds.
Loudog760

Sweet snake for sure.
Herpetologyfrk

Yeah switch them ASAP, if you don't soon as they get older they will refuse mice.

I know of a couple tricks, let me find some videos, and i'll send you the links =]

Good luck Kyle!
Celeste

Yeah -- I used to have a Vine Snake and I got it feeding on rat pinkies by rubbing them on a dead anole I kept in the freezer...  :-/
noexcuse4you

Here's the setup in which I'm keeping them.  Its pretty simple - UTH heater, hide on the warm side, hide on the cool side, Helix thermostat.  I hope they're happy. Smile  The guy on top of his hide looks like he is.

balam

Hey Kyle, those set-ups sure look like they'll make the snakeys  happy.
The container is also pretty darn nice, where did you get it?
noexcuse4you

They're the large exoterra breeder boxes.  I got them at LLL for $8.
balam

LLL? fill me in please. I'd love to purchase some Smile

There are locations in Oceanside and Escondido down here in San Diego.
balam

Nice, Thanks.

RE: feeding.
I've also heard from people that in order to get certain snakes to feed on pinkies they poke a hole on the cranium and expose a bit of brain matter. Is this viable?

Yeah, I have done this successfully. It does work/
Celeste

... I *hope* you guys are talking about pinkies that are already dead!   :-P
noexcuse4you

New snakies!  I got 2, supposedly 100% het for blonde.

I love these guys!

balam

what a looker Smile
Guess you'll have to wait some time before you find out if they really are 100% het.
noexcuse4you

Such a cutie!

noexcuse4you

Here's the male.  He hasn't even had his first shed yet and he's huge!

MUD

Wow. He looks awesome. Very nice Kyle.
Celeste

My favorites!  Congratulations, Kyle!
noexcuse4you

The male just shed and kept his nice silver color!

MUD

He looks really cool. I love the patterns.
noexcuse4you

Kick arse!  These guys skipped pinkies and are takin' down fuzzies.
