Need Opinion/Help From Our Local Scorp ExpertsHey All,
Being questioned about an A. Australis / Yellow Fat Tail that I sold as "Gravid"...
Being questioned regarding if it's Actually "Gravid" or Just in "PreMoult?"...
If I'm wrong & she's not gravid I want to make good by my customer & work something out with them...
But I'm thinking she is way gravid...
Brief History~
I received her as gravid from my scorp guy who has proven to be very trustworthy / Never had any problems with any of the scorps or info. I've received from him...
She was slightly swollen when I got her {approx. July / Aug. ?} & she has been steadily getting fatter/wider & swelling up ever since, which I would say would be consistent with a scorp being gravid / scorpling development...
I have pics where you can see that she's more then doubled in size {not length / but girth} in the time I've had her...
+ In all of the years I've kept scorps, I can't say that I've ever seen a scorp do that premoult / Not like that...
But, hey I could be wrong...
So if you wouldn't mind checking out the pics {taken day before sending} posted at~
http://good-times.webshots.com/album/569521015PMAPof
And giving me your expert opinion on if she's "Gravid" or in "PreMoult?" I would greatly appreciate it...
Like I said, if I'm wrong, I will make good on the sale, but want to be sure before doing or saying anthing...
Thanx,
Eric

Hello Eric,
I would guesstimate gravid, although she seems a little bit on the small size still.
Was she a LTC WC specimen from your friend??? Or Did he acctually mated his male and female?????

I am going to go with graivd. I have a male premoult A. Australis and while it looks similar it also looks different in some way. Hard to explain. On my premoult male it looks more expanded in length with a good amount of girth increase as well. Your picture looks more like my really gravid H. a. pallidus in that it has not gained much in length but are all the proportions of beer keg.
Sorry this lacks any real scientific reasoning, but it was the only way I could explain it.

I'm gonna have to disagree with the above statements. It's a fatty and premolt. Which isn't actually very good as the fatter a scorpion is prior to molting the more likely it is to have a bad molt. I would stop feeding it for a while and raise the temps a few degrees.
(EDIT) my reasons: There are no embreyos visable in either picture but you can sort of see the new exo underneath already.

Eric,
I am not a scorpion authority by any measure. However, I do have scorpions that I can compare to. I have a pre-moult australis here and the shape is much different from that of a gravid scorp. It's like Sean said, its hard to describe but a gravid female usually has the keg appearance rather than the puffed sides and increased length. I really do not see this as being an overweight pre-molt.
The embryo visability is not always a good indicator either. I have a very gravid pallidus and it is very difficult to see any embryo's as well.
Again, I am not scorp expert but this is based on my observations with what we own.

Denise, your right that embreyos arent always visible but in this particular species that would be so gravid as to get that big you would most defiantly some some embreyos. Can i get a size comaparrison shot next to a quarter or something it looks to young to me anyways to be gravid. Maybe even some pectine shots as well.

"Sean / Denise"
I total and completely know what you mean...
&
That's where I'm stuck...
To "Me" she looks gravid / I've never seen one swell up like that premoult...
But, that's me & since there is doubt I may very well be wrong {Really, It Does Happen Sometimes... ::lol::...}...
And if I am wrong, then I learned something new...
So I guess you can call it a win win situation...
::lol::
Thanx Again For The Input
It's Very Much Appritiated

get a size comparrison shot and we can be more precise with our answers.

I also say premolt.
At that size you should be able to see the embryo's through the sides, all I see is what looks like the new exo underneath.

Since there is doubt & I'm not 100% sure I guess I'll settle things with the buyer

Hey Man, No Worries / It's All Good
I'm not trying to hide anything
Just trying to find out if I mis IDed a premoult scorp as being gravid or not
If I was wrong to call it gravid it was an honest mistake
Since there is doubt & I'm not 100% either way at this point I'm working things out with the buyer
Thanx Again To Everyone For Their Input
Even though it's not exactly what I wanted to hear {::lol::} It was helpful & much appreciated none the less

Well, after reading that thread and seeing the additional pictures I am leaning towards premoult (60-40)... 2.5-3 inches would be small for an adult, and the pictures in that thread show a pretty good increase in length in addition to girth. I guess there is only one way to find out for sure!
