North American Jaguars and Ringtails

Hi Guys,

I've been working on some articles about endangered/rare species. Some are so rare in California and the Southwest in general, people think I'm lying about their existence in these areas.

Here are 2 links about 2 animals not many people know are here in the Southwest/California.

North American Jaguars: http://www.swjag.org/index.html

Ringtail: http://bss.sfsu.edu/holzman/courses/Fall02%20projects/Ringtail.htm

                                      Enjoy, Eric

do you know what the full range is... i live in riverside county... about 2 nights ago i saw a cat that was smaller than a mountian lion but way way bigger than a regular cat... it seemed to be stalking one of the neighborhood dogs... i couldnt see any color since it was night... this cat was huge though... it had looked in my direction when i walked outside and went rite back to what it was doing... i owned a female african black mane lion a few years back so i can tell the difference between a house cat and something larger... any ideas?

Could it have been a Bobcat? There are a lot of those around and I've seen plenty get used to being close to humans. Years ago I could count on seeing one under the same tree out in the horse trailor parking area at Casper's Park. He was always there hanging in the shade we we finished our ride in the afternoon and loaded up the horses. While no where near the size of a Mountain Lion; they're way bigger than your typical house cat. Nobody would ever get them confused.

What Jules said, hahaha! Most likely a Bobcat, looks like a really heavy bodied/fat cat . Grey to light brown in color, ears have fur that comes to a point and a very short tail, where the name "bob" cat comes from.

The last jaguar seen in California was in the Palm Springs "area" I believe in the early 1900's or late 1800's.

Ringtails are here in Orange County and Western Los Angeles County  (I've seen one in Malibu), I'm not sure about Riverside County.

Eric,

Thanks for the links. I haven't even finished going through the Jaguar one yet. Amazing and beautiful species. I had no idea they existed much less locally!! It doesn't sound like they'll ever be very many of them though. It sounds like they are less likely to cohabitate so closely to humas as Mountain Lions do. I have only come across a Mountain Lion one time; however, I've seen more Bobcats than I can remember. They are gorgeous animals.

Who or what are you writing the article for? Very interesting information; I'd love to learn even more about them.

Its sad that people forget that certain predators are still out there roaming and need to keep there pets safe. At my old house in Corona we would lose dogs and cats on a daily basis. I would find parts of cats and small dogs every few days on the sidewalks and near the hiking trails.

There were a few wack jobs in the area that wanted to eliminate the coyotes and bobcats Rolling Eyes
