Only in captivity temporarily -- pretty cricket

I don't see these very often:

She's a very pretty girl!  Glossy dark brown/black with little white markings on her sides.  Pretty good size, too... well over 1", not including ovipositor.

Hello All,
Celeste, I love field crickets (Gryllus assimilis) they are big and nice.

I rescued a few of these at work the other night. They ride in on the pallets between the boards and come out in the recieving area. I saw one in the back room, and one on the sales floor, and took them both outside and released them in a big grassy area in the parking lot.

Those look alot like the ones that live in my back yard.

They are actualy the first source of food i ever used when i started taking care of spiders Razz

Then i started buying the ones from the pet store but the first cricket i ever gave to my tarrantula was one of those big black ones.

I guess maybe those are simply more common down here in canada . I've actualy never seen any other types of wild crickets around here.

One interesting thing i noticed about them is that they don't mind sharing territory with beetles.

Well at least one kind of beetles. I'll try and take a picture of a cricket and beetle collony sharing the same holes in the ground, it's pretty cool.

I'll just need to find a collony first hehe.

Krawll, these are really only pretty common outside of urban areas down here. At least around Bakersfield. We've also caught some less common crickets that were pink and green. I'll have to have Nick post pictures of them.
Celeste

We have a lot of ants around here (it's pretty dry), and I think they don't co-exist very well with ants...

You're probably right :-)

Rosenkrieger, i'd be very happy to see those pictures of the pink and green ones.

Not that i like pink very much but i'm always interested in new species of any bugs. :-)

Hehe, even though spiders and me have alot in common cuz i've always been a solitary person and i live at night and stuff, i've never realy been attracted to their food ::lol::.  I'll just leave the crix to them and i'll stick with pizza Razz

I've seen a kid eating the molt of his friend's tarrantula the other day on youtube.  Thats another thing i wouldn't do ::lol::.
