Parthenogenic Spider Species (THEOTIMA MINUTISSIMUS)

OBSERVATIONS OF THEOTIMA MINUTISSIMUS (ARANEAE, OCHYROCERATIDAE), A PARTHENOGENETIC SPIDER

Robert L. Edwards, Eric H. Edwards, Annabel D. Edwards

Quote:
Abstract

It has been suggested by several authorities that at least one species of spider of the genus Theotima, family Ochyroceratidae, occurring in tropical regions in South Africa, the Caribbean and Asia may be parthenogenetic. Theotima minutissimus is particularly abundant in the tropical rainforest leaf litter on El Yunque, Puerto Rico. While many hundreds of specimens have been collected over many years, none has been a male. To examine the possibility that this small species, ± 0.9 mm body length, is parthenogenetic, live specimens were collected and maintained in the laboratory. A second generation spiderling, raised separately, produced viable progeny.

i might do a bit of googling on this species later on. it's interesting to think about

how exactly does Wolbachia cause the effect of parthenogenesis?
Celeste

There's a specie of lizards in Mexico that are all female and parthenogenic as well...

yeah but I think they hybridized from two sp. I'm not too clear on the issue, but it's some sort of striped lizard if I'm correct.

I don't know if it has to do directly with a type of fungus. In the case of inverts Wolbachia is estimated to exist in at least 50% of all insect sp. The numbers are incredible, but what I haven't found is just exactly how it affects the reproductory organs, how it kills males or renders them *incompatible* .

WHAT?! Shocked

That's amazing! I thought that only aphids were parthenogenetic.

Well you learn something new everyday.

noexcuse4you

I'm parthenogenic.

I guess I'll be keeping them company!  I have always thought it was "parthenogenic", too.  But I looked it up in the dictionary, and it looks like Oscar is right... "parthenogenetic".  Weird.

At one point I did too. But then I looked at the spelling and forced myself to get "used" to saying it the proper way.....XD

Funny huh?

Habibi, between that jumping thing in your signature and that crazy star in your avatar, you're going to give me a seizure.
