puppy de-wormer

Chase and i adopted a chihuahua puppy. He was free so i wasn't expecting him to be in great health, but he is actually pretty decent. My only complaint is that he is rather bloated and I'm pretty sure that means ether malnutrition, or intestinal worms. I'm leaning more toward worms. For the sake of asking, does any one have a de-wormer they can send asap? I' promise I'll pay you back. I want to get this taken care of before ho gets really bad.

They have some at the 99c store actually. It's for cats, but I just up the dosage. It goes by weight.

It works too! I have it for my cats, and when I had dogs I gave it to them too.

Edit: Also one of my friends doesn't even use a de-wormer, he gives them a clove of garlic. You have to force it on them, but it works too. All of his dogs are in tip top shape

hhhmmm allright. I'll look. Garlic huh?

hes really small, i would have to mush it up

Please please PLEASE take him to a vet (as soon as possible) -- it might be coccidia or some other kind of intestinal infection that should not be treated with de-wormer...  Coccidia is really common, and can kill him if left untreated.  Does he have diarrhea?
BamBaboons

No  diarrhea, hes really active and alert. We want to take him to the vet asap, but were a bit short on cash, is there a payment plan we can go on?

He's eating and drinking well too. If that helps any.

_ after some reading, i'm fairly sure it isn't  Coccidia, bloating was never mentioned in the symptoms, an he doesn't have diarrhea, which is the most common symptom.

and heres a pic of the little guy, not for diagnosing purposes, just for looks

I have the Care Credit card for my dental insurance but it can also be used for vets.  Just Google "Care Credit."

Very cute doggy by the way Smile

Thanks, yeah, we're planning on getting pet insurance.

hes still activ and not acting sick at all, were going to take him to the vet when we can fir a check up and shots.

if he's healthy right now, you can probably hold off on worming him until his vet visit, or at least until you find some evidence of worms.

He's very cute, congrats. And hopefully you are blessed with one of the mythical "good" chihuahuas- one that doesn't bark at every little thing, and is actually friendly towards non-family members, ::lol::.
BamBaboons

::lol::, yeah, we will be working with every little behavioral issue to make him one of those mythical chi's.

Ive been reading on a few chihuahua sites that when you get a new dog you should de-worm it. as precaution. he was an "accident, and i doubt, other than getting a bath before they were given away, that they had any medical care what so ever. 3 month old, no shots, never been de-wormed. and his little hip bones were visible when we got him.

he probably does have worms. My chihuahua had them when she was a puppy, and I paid a good $400 for her (talked them down from $800). She was intentionally bred, and had her first shots, but still had worms. I didn't catch it until she was five months old, and treated her at that time, and there were no problems. So its not necessarily a big rush. It should be done routinely with his first shots. Different wormers are for different types of worms, though, so you'll want to know what type he has before you give him anything... If you see them in his stool, you can ID them, or you can wait until he goes to the vet and have a fecal exam done, and they can tell you...

It wouldnt be such a rush, however we have other dogs in the house, and we want to nip it in the bud before we end up having to get them all de-wormed.

Well, Looks like the isolation from the other animals was in order. I ran him on a round of de-wormer earlier today, and sure enough, he pooped out a number of dead roundworms (Toxocara canis). I'll be running him on another round of it in a few days as the bottle instructed.
