OK, here are two links to some D.L.L. pics. i would like to know why people call both of those Arachnids Daddy-Long-Legs ?
One has a Sausage shaped body and the other one has a Meatball shaped body ::lol::. One has more characteristics related to spiders than the other one.
The sausage shaped one has a body separated in two parts, same as spiders. It seems to have both an abdomen and a Cephalothorax. It also seems to have palps.... well actualy i think they both have palps ::lol:: so just scratch that
So anyways , i was just wondering if Daddy-Long-Legs stands for the family or the species and also what would be the real name for this class of Arachnids. I think i've heard someone call them Harvestmen or something like that once or twice. Could that be the one.
The only thing i realy DO know about those arachnids is that they are supposed to have the strongest venom of all arachnids. But lucky for us , their fangs are too week to bite through human skin. Or i'm guessing any Mammals as large as a rat or bigger.
Any additional infos would be apreciated. I've only started showing interest about spiders and insects so i'm still just a larva when it comes to knowledge.

i don't know where the "daddy" part comes from, but the long-legs part is obvious

the sausage-shaped ones are spiders, specifically members of the family Pholcidae. (2 body segments)
the meatball-shaped ones are harvestmen, which are arachnids but not in the same order as spiders. (opiliones vs. araneae) (1 body segment)
both have palps.

this is an urban legend. their venom is not especially harmful, at all.

-some people also call craneflies (insects in the family Tipulidae) daddy long-legs
-harvestmen are more willing to eat plant matter and dead animals than spiders
-there are some really cool looking harvestmen!
Thank you for replying so fast and for all the infos.
Yes i agree that some of those harvestmen realy do look nice. I had no idea there were so many species
I guess anybody who wants to post anything about Havestmen A.K.A. Daddy-Long-Legs here in this thread is welcome to do so. I admit i haven't browsed the whole forum yet but so far i haven't found a thread especialy for them :-)
