Reptile Volenteer serviceDoes any know where I can volunteer at a place that specifically involve REPTILES in Long Beach CA? I need hours for high school and I'm sick of Libraries, Animal Shelters that won't let me in, and beach clean ups.

Try Reptile Finders on PCH, or West Coast Reptiles, do a Google search too for reptile shops etc.... Matt

I checked online and most of the "shops" aren't a non-profit organization. I'm only allowed to volunteer for a non-profit organization

I think you can volenteer for us everytime we have a booth at an event. I have hours for school too so I am always looking for something fun to do.
I worked at BioQuip in december to earn some hours once.

Maybe try the Herpetologists Society ( www.swhs.org ) ? Check their "links" page, or the officers page and try calling some of the officers in your area code (if any).

Sparky,
How old are you and how far are you willing to drive? I might be able to set you up with something, if you meet certain requirements.

Hello All,
Hey Eric,
I want to get my license for some Gila monsters and I need several hours working with venemous.
Do you have a place for me to gain some experience and hours????
I am not applying soon (I heard is really hard almost imposible for a normal hobbiest) but I do want to get ahead of the game if I can.

Sparky,
You can try contacting Brent Karner at the NAtural History Museum, they house reptiles at the Discovery center/Insect zoo.

I only work with venomous snakes when out on research in the field. I think it is almost impossible to get hours now in California, since most zoos are AZA and will only allow employees to handle the venomous animals. There are really strict rules by the AZA on who is allowed to handle even non-venomous animals.
I'm not too familiar with the DFG rules on H. suspectum. All I know is that it is a pain in the rear. I heard that Bob Applegate (well known herp breeder) has had Gilas for years and he had to fight just to keep them when a special license was required.
I would talk to the DFG biologist who issues the permits and see what he or she says is the best steps to take. There is a number on the DFG website that takes you directly on the licensing biologist. It might take them a while to get to you since they are so busy. It took close to a year for my research permits to be approved.

They still offer it but, super hard to get into (shut up guys )
They want people with experience, just to get experience Seriously!
Trying to get a job or even a volunteer position at an AZA approved zoo takes a ton of hard work and drive, its competitive. Took me close to 15 years to get a paid position. If you work hard enough, it will eventually happen.
