HEllo ALl,
CAn the MOds please read this and see if you want us to attend and participate.
I have the rest of the info and applications too.
Dear Bioblitz Collaborators,
I wanted to formally invite you to have a booth at the Bioblitz May 30 and 31, 2008. As most of you know, this event is a 24 hour
species count with a public festival at Paramount Ranch in Agoura Hills, CA. The event is sponsored by National Geographic, the
National Park Service, California State Parks, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and Griffith Park. 1000 school kids are
expected on Friday alone and if the media buzz and blitz is as big as planned, several thousand people could be at the festival and
basecamp as well.
Please send back the attached registration form to Sheila Braden at sheila_braden@nps.gov no later than April 21, 2008 to reserve
your spot.
If you will be selling any items please fill out the vendor form and return to Sheila with a list of sales items. Fees shown on the
form will be waived for the non-profit Bioblitz vendors.
Please note that I will be out of town the week of March 24 returning to the office on March 31. If you have questions during that
time please email Sheila Braden at the email above. Thank you.

Santa Monica Mountains Bioblitz Event

March 14, 2008
Dear Bioblitz Collaborator,
National Geographic Society and the National Park Service together with the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, California
State Parks and Griffith Park are sponsoring the Santa Monica Mountains BioBlitz, a 24 hour all species inventory from noon May
30 to noon May 31, 2008. During that time, scientists, students and volunteers will comb the Santa Monica Mountains observing
and recording in 24 hours as many plant and animal species as they can. Headquarters and Scientist Base Camp for the event will
be Paramount Ranch in Agoura Hills.
Accompanying the event will be the Celebrate Biodiversity Festival with ongoing activities, including lectures, interactive
displays, and exhibits at Paramount Ranch. Almost 1000 school children are expected at the Paramount Ranch Basecamp between
10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday May 30. Officially, the BioBlitz activities start with opening ceremonies at 11:30 am on Friday, May
30 and conclude at noon on Saturday with final species tallies. A closing ceremony will take place from noon to 1 p.m. on
Saturday, May 31. The fun continues with a public festival from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. to celebrate the conservation of biodiversity.
Music, speakers, live animal demonstrations, exhibits and family activities are planned. I would like to cordially invite you to join
us in this two day celebration.
In order to participate, please reserve a space by submitting the enclosed reservation form. We would like to have engaging
exhibits up both days to have the widest possible coverage. You will need a table and chairs along with your displays. If you
desire shade, please bring some type of sunshade. Consider bringing something fun for kids. Organizations may sell biodiversitythemed
items appropriate to the event. We will provide free two-day sales permits for non-profit collaborator booths. All sales
items must be listed on a separate sheet and approved by National Park Service in advance. Just let us know what you plan to sell
and if you plan to accept donations at your booth. Please, no political statements or endorsements.
Please return the enclosed reservation form to confirm your participation before Monday, April 28, 2008 so we may reserve your
space and include you in the event sponsor board and program. Upon receiving your form, you will receive a confirmation with
event map and directions. Please fill out the form even if we have already been in touch.
I am looking forward to seeing you at the 2008 BioBlitz Celebration!
Sincerely,
Margie Steigerwald Chair, Public Programs, SMMNRA Bioblitz

Just got home from the BioBlitz closing ceremony festival. Alot of people and organizations there. I checked the tally inventory tent and looked around for spiders but I guess they had already finished,...I really dont know.
Took my camera but when I pulled it out I realized that I had no memory card and was pissed. Went by a booth and this lady had a Tengellidae spider in a small container and I was very surprised. I asked her where she got it from and she said from her backyard in the Topanga area. She was very impressed that I ID'd it cuz she was asking people and nobody knew. I made good contacts and scored on a BioBlitz water bottle, pen and hankie.

Hello All,
I forgot to post this ealier.
BioBlitz has come and gone and apparently was a success. Many students (mostly field trip participants) were present and the Saturday portion off the event was well attended by the public. Scientists are still counting up the species, but on May 31 there was this tally:
Hey!, I was there when this guy was doing his speech.
