Well, I'm hoping there's more where this one came from:

Two babies:
Oops! I didn't notice the legs sticking out from under her tummy -- that's *three* so far...

Closeup:
I notice the mother has her second pair of legs tucked under her, as if she is using them to monitor or assist with the births.

Ooh, baby scorps are cute. Are you going to sell these? If so, I'll be interested
|
Herpetologyfrk

Congrats! I'll be interested in one too
|
Celeste

Oh, yes, there'll be some for sale -- we definitely can't keep them all!
Looks like about 14 now, but it's too hard to count them:
It's funny, because they look just like little maggots or something, but I just find baby scorpions *soooo* adorable!

rosenkrieger

Awesome. I'll take 3 when they're ready.

this is another species i love to see bred. it has been locally extincted in some of the collection areas in africa, from what i have read

Just thought I'd post a final picture:
I still can't tell how many there are -- I'm guessing the final count is somewhere around 20??? (Lookit those cute little curly-cue tails!!!)
She (the mom) is SO CRABBY!!! I set up a larger enclosure for her and the babies, but every time I even so much as *touched* her current enclosure she went crazy defensive! Rearing up, claws in the air, tail ready to strike. I don't want her knocking the babies off, so I'm leaving her alone for the most part.
Does anyone know if she will eat now? Should I try to feed her a disabled cricket or something? I don't want to endanger the babies, but I want to feed her if she's hungry so she doesn't decide to munch the little ones. I could try what I did with the Flat Rocks which was put some waxworms in the enclosure.

HEllo All,
Celeste, no need to feed the mom.
She will be fine until the babies leave her back.
No need to change her to another terrarium either.
Keep her in low light and higher humidity.

Wow, nice Celeste, How many adults do you have in the enclosure?
I just picked up some emps myself Saturday and off to a good start. I dropped in 4 emps into a communal tank I just set up for them. I walked out the room for about 5 minutes, come back, check the tank and 2 emps were bow chika wow wowing already

Sorry, Eric -- I forgot to answer your question: I only have the one female, by herself (officially, she is my son's, but you know who takes care of her...). But now that I know they can be housed communally, I will definitely house any babies we keep communally.

Oh crap, I'll go check under them right now, I just threw them in there and didn't think about the ratio. Thanks for the warning

Well, the mom hasn't come out of her hidey-cave since the day after the babies were born (16 days ago). But looking in through the little window of the cave, it *looks* like the babies may have molted: they look more like little miniature Emperor Scorpions now than just little maggots. (The big pile on the mom's back looks more "fluffy" -- more little legs and claws and tails sticking out in all directions. The pile was more "flat" while all the babies still looked like maggots). The one baby I got a clear view of had faint brown bands across its back, too.
Here is the best photo I could get of them:
You can see that their tails appear to have more segments now, so they must have molted or something. But I don't see any molted exuvia in there. Maybe mom ate the exuvia? I'll keep a watch and let you know if/when I see the babies out and about.
BTW: I should note, the mom was REALLY THIRSTY after the babies were born, and drank a LOT that first night.
Yeah... comparing this picture to the earlier ones, you can see their claws are bigger and better defined, too. They have definitely molted...

Well it is said that mom will tend for the scorplings during this time, so I wonder if the water she drank will be use later on for the babies?????

I don't know -- I Just thought I should note it in case anyone else has a female that gives birth.

The babies are off mom's back (except for one straggler). There are 26 of them altogether -- all healthy and spunky and full of attitude (and cute as can be!) :-)
We're not in any hurry to get rid of them, but I guess they can go to new homes now if anyone is interested (I know rosenkrieger and Herpetologyfrk both expressed interest). We're asking $5 each for them, and we will probably only sell 20 and keep 6.

You can put me down for three Celeste

rosenkrieger

I'll take 3 as well. Were you gonna ship them, or bring them to the next BBQ?
|
Celeste
|
Balam -- 3
Rosenkrieger -- 3
(and I'll set one aside for herpetologyfrk until I hear from him)
----------------------
leaves 13 still available.
It's too hot and too expensive to ship them, and I'm not planning to drive all the way out to the next BBQ, but I'll ask someone else who *is* going to take them for you.
Balam: you're close enough I can meet you somewhere to hand them over -- probably next weekend.
Here are the little piglets stuffing their faces:
(I pre-killed the crickets before dropping them in there, but the baby Emperors were all out and prowling around last night with their little stingers way up in the air. Like I said -- lots of attitude!) :-)
