Surprise from Balam

I traded Balam a box of Blaberus fusca for a Hadogenes paucidens (Olive Keeled Flat Rock) at the last BBQ. I'll get you Balam, I will, I will. What a dirty trick! You conveniently "forgot" to mention that she was carrying multiple buns in the oven and now she's squirting babies all over the place. Nice guy! Now I'm having to raise YOUR babies. Man you are one lazy dude. I'll post pictures when possible without freaking her out.

oh wow. Shoot one over here. I wanna see if I have the patience to keep one at full life cycle.

You want one while it's still white? Will you be at Andrew's party?
balam

That is some funny business Oger. Congratulations! being that I actually like small slow-growing scorps I wouldn't mind taking [i]some[i/] off your hands Smile

Funny, I think I heard it somewhere before... hmm
ogershok

So far so good - there is only about five babies but they're still doing fine as of this morning.

sure i'll be there. Hopefully they molt by then...if not I can set up a 1st instar incubator....or pay you to ship one when they molt.
ogershok

Update - there's about 12 to 15 of them now. Still hanging in there...

Let's just see if I'm able to get them past the first molt for now. I hate counting chickens before they're hatched.

Yeah -- I got one at last year's March BBBQ that had babies a couple of weeks later.  She had 7 altogether (about one a day for a week).  Most of them died within the first few weeks.  Two survived about two months, and then both failed to molt again and died at about two months...

Good luck with them!
balam

This sounds like an interesting project (raising them).
Any idea as to why the ones you kept didn't make it?
I would sure like to give it a try Smile
Celeste

I thought perhaps insufficient humidity (they both died in separate containers within a day of each other, at about two months of age, so I suspected a failure to molt).  But it's such a fine line between sufficient humidity and fungus...  :-(   I have another baby (I bought the *same day* as that mother) that was only a few months old at the time that is still surviving.  (Kept under the same conditions).  It hasn't grown noticeably, and has only molted one time since.  (I'm sure it has actually grown, but it is almost imperceptible).  They are REALLY SLOW growers!

I bought a bunch of H. paucidens a few months ago in the hopes of breeding them again.  If they *do* produce babies, I'll experiment with a range of moisture/humidity levels.
balam

How are these little guys coming along?
ogershok

Still doing OK. They're darkening up quite a bit so I expect a molt soon.
balam

Keep us updated Oger. If you are planing on selling I will take 2-5 of them. I don't much mind slow growers.

They'll probably out live you first before they even reach maturity..

Yeah, they'll probably outlive me for sure. Being old sucks.
ogershok

They're darkening up nicely but still riding on mama.
balam

Good to know. Maybe they'll be ready for next BBQ. Smile

Hello Dave,

Well, I think that if you feed them the toxic and nuclear stuff you feed your Ts, they should grow up really fast.

How is this coming along Oger?
ogershok

I separated them from momma and there are twelve altogether. Doing OK so far... each of them has had one meal. Cute little guys.
cacoseraph
