Therea petiverianaOne of my domino roaches molted mature today! I believe this one's a male.

Hello Kyle,
I heard that the male female ratio for Therea sp is 9:1 and males died sooner than females.
good luck with them.

Well I guess that one is a female! One just molted and is smaller and has longer antennae. I put them both on the piece of cork for a pic, and they started mating!!

The one to the right is the male I think. Congratulations on the molt.

The one on the left is the male. The one on the right is a female.
This may be a little graphic, but I don't care. Its exciting!

Hi Kyle,
I just love your photos. Domino roaches are so cute. I just got 4 of them.
I have some understanding of the basic care but would you mind posting on how you care for them? There is not a lot of information out there about this cool roach!
Thank you!

I don't really do anything special with them. I keep them in a deli cup filled halfway with coco fiber and I throw in a green bean, a dog food pellet, or a carrot every couple days or so and then take it out and replace it with a fresh one to prevent molding. I also occasionally mist and I keep a couple water crystals in a bottle cap in the enclosure.

Thank you!
I also read that you can give them rotting leaves, branches and logs.
I hope I have a female in my mix.

I have found 2 ooths in their enclosure. There is only one mature female in there so she's the only one popping them out. I guess they lay more than one at a time. Another male matured so hopefully the 4th one is a female. The two males are always chasing around the female so I think I'm going to separate them because they're driving her and I crazy!

Those are some awesome roaches. I might have to get me some of those!!
Where did you guys get them? Are they super expensive??

::lol:: well the more babies the better. The dominos are hard to come by and from what I have read, they can take up to 5 months for those babies to hatch. They also mature slowly. I did buy mine as adults so hopefully I wil have some babies at some point. I think you and I are going to have
My male was doing the same thing, chasing the female around. All the female was interested in doing was eating and eventually the male left her alone.
I personally find them facinating and they seem to have little personalities.
When I received my roaches, everyone in my office was screaming "its a roach, thats gross!" "if you wanted roaches, I would have gotten you one out of the mens bathroom!" etc....
Good luck on the babies. Take pictures and post!

Hey, I just did a search on AB. It doesn't look like they're offered much but somebody posted a sale ad just today. Is this a good deal - I have no idea? Also, I'm not interested in buying $100 worth, maybe 4 or 6. Would anyone else be interested?

Jules-Ken the Bug guy has them for $8 each. I bough 4 of them. How much are they on AB?
Also, if you wait, there will be babies (in 5 months) but I do not think you want to wait that long.

duh. You sent the link Jules.
Sorry about that.
Im willing to buy some more but not too much.
She is saying the get around 3/4 but my female is around 1".
They do climb but they would rather burrow. I find my running around their enclosure or burrowed.
Anyhow , see if we can get someone else to go in with us.

I'll put a thread in Deal Me In to see if anyone else is interested. $5 each seems pretty cheap and these aren't tiny nymphs.

I think I'm good on dominos. 4 is really enough for me. Find someone with some glowspots for cheap!

What the? I just looked in their deli, and the female is venting ANOTHER egg case! How many do these things lay at a time?
|
DeniseCasey

HI Kyle,
I am not sure how many oothecases they can produce but I do know that with this species, once they mate, the female refrains from semenation for the rest of their lives.

I am trying to do as much research as possible on these cute bugs but there is very little known about them.

Yeah, in another 5 months you're going to be REALLY good as far as domino's go!!! That's awesome Kyle! What kinds of hormones are you mixing with their food!?!?!
|
Jules
|
Hey Kyle,
What kind of substrate is that you are using for your domono's? Do you keep it dry? Yours seem to be doing so well reproducing; I was hoping to duplicate whatever you're doing. Is there a decent care sheet available for this species?
|
noexcuse4you
|
I just keep about 3" of coco fiber and mist occasionally. I throw in a carrot about once a week and keep it in there until it's dessicated. I also mist them whenever I mist the T's. That's about the extent of my care giving!
|
Jules
|
That sounds easy enough! So these guys are fine on just veggies? I give my dubia dog food also.

HEllo ALL,
Jules, dog food is fine for them too.

Just an update:
I found an ootheca in my enclosure. Wish me luck for babies!
Thank goodness this happened after I changed their substrate. I think my roaches were mating in the temporary enclosure. The male was chasing my 2 females around.
How are yours doing Kyle?
|
noexcuse4you
|
I've transferred mine into a medium KK with some nice oak and hardwood mulch. I took the ooths from their old enclosure and buried them in the mulch. They seem to like the mulch a lot better! No more digging and scratching and trying to climb out! They seem to like carrots and green beans. I haven't seen them touch the dog food yet.
|

Cool-good information to have.
I have mine housed in a almost 5 gallon tank but I use the organic cocofiber and this is when I got the ootheca. I left the ootheca in the enclosure but like you, buried it under the cocofiber.
I will try the green beans as I already give them carrots. I do leave dog food in for them. You may not see them eat it though. What I have caught mine doing is taking the kibble from their dish and burrowing under the substrate with it.
They seem to be a very private species.
I think you have only a couple of months to go before those babies hatch if my source of information is correct!
Keep us posted on any progress!
