Three PLUS foot centipede!

I WC this guy myself. i noticed it had a double foot when i captured it... but when it molted it sprung a whole new ending of its leg... so now it is THREE FEET on one leg  Razz

The centipede has four feet on one foot now, iirc

maybe it's the next step in evolution, and it is going for a hand with an opposable thumb!?

Scientists have wondered for years about the cause of multiple extra limbs in amphibians.  It was thought to be an indication of chemical contamination pollution.  However, recently, it was discovered that a certain parasite can also cause these deformities:

well, i think in centipedes there is a much easier path to ~polydactylism.. since they can regerate legs i think that the leg was damaged and isn't getting the "signal" that the limb was successfully regenerated.

the centpede has four feet on that leg now, btw
(i can't see the pics so i dont remember what they show)

Who knows?  I had a snake once that had a strange lump on its side.  When I finally excised the lump, it appeared to contain layer after layer of scales all wrapped around each other.  It wasn't shedded skin either, it was actual *scales*...  Really bizarre.

I am still intrigued by two-headed snakes and turtles and such.  You can often find them for sale (especially the turtles).  Here's a place that often has them:

I have occasionally seen two-headed snakes for sale, but they are usually in the $10s of thousands of dollars price range, and I just don't have that kind of spare change laying around for a "novelty" (since I doubt their offspring would be two-headed).

But I digress...

Cool bug, Andrew!

yeah, i tend to think most things like this are either congenital or post paturation damage and not gentic

i would LOVE to get gene polycephaloids or polydactyls of ANYTHING!

i am going to try to breed this centipede (i think it is a male and should be old enough/big enough to breed now) in the hopes it is genetic... but not holding my breath
Steven

Thats cool.

and check out those rare turtles ...love the one that has 0 eyes! Looks like its a genetic thing.
