trying to ID

trying to ID a  small black spider that has a white patch on it's abdomen it's the second one i caught leg span is about half an inch it resembles a california trapdoor can't find any good links on socal spiders and i don't have a camera.
What

I am going to say it is probably a Steatoda grossa or another Steatoda sp...

Other than that it might be a Phidippus audax or maybe even an immature Latrodectus hesperus...

The only thing that sounds like is a jumping spider.
You must have a bud that has a cell phone with camera? course ya do ...take a quicko snap shot and post it here.  Wink
What

Yeah, now that I look at the description more closely P. audax is the only thing that really makes sense... Eh, I was rushing to get out and do a bit of night driving in this rain, too bad it was a waste of time.  Confused
arachnofein

I don't have the spiders anymore released them but i'm positive it's not P.audax.I kept one for 2 months it sits and waits for prey and prefers the ground and the body shape is similar to a cali trapdoor i will try to collect some more specimens so i could get a pic it is solid black with a white spot an the topside of the abdomen all five specimens where the same size.
What

Well, if you are planning on going to the BBBQ I would be more than happy to take a few of them...
arachnofein

I'm trying to get out of a trip to oregon so i could go to the bbq and i'm looking for some specimens it might be too late in the season but if all goes well then i will try to bring some to the bbq cross your fingers.
cacoseraph

coloration can be quite variable in spiders, so you might need to look to other things for your ID

also, sometimes we can only get down to family or genus when ID'ing cuz species ID involves disecting a mature male under a microscope Sad
