Vaejovis sp. (GENERAL SoCAL caresheet)

Genus: Vaejovis

Species: N/A

Common Name(s): Most have no common name but some such as V.spinigerus have official common names in the U.S.
V.spinigerus: Arizona Stripedtail Scorpion (official), Devil Stripedtail Scorpion, Devil Scorpion
LOCATION: North America: Mexico and USA (California, Arizona, Nevada, & New Mexico). These scorpions inhabit dry substrate of all kinds but usually not found in overly sandy areas (beaches, deserts).

Substrate: Dry substrate of any kind but avoid using only sand. I recommend a combination of about 75 percent dry peat with 25 percent sand.

LD value: Varies from species but this genus is not know for a medically significant venom. Stings do tend to be rather painful with some species.

Type of Scorpion; Dry burrower/ Rock Dweller: Does not dig tunnels but will make its own hides. Usually under rocks.

Adult size: Usually about three inches

Growth: Medium

Temp: 78-88F But can handle low temps.

Humidity:55-65(just dry substrate)

Temperament: Can very but usually very nervous.

Feeding: 2-3 times a month (some are more hardy eaters)*. You can provide a shallow water dish for water. Do not use sponges as they are prone to bacteria.

Decorations: Any kind of rock it can dig under to make burrow. Usually a flat rock works best to allow for mating. But a flat piece of cork works just as well

Communal: Sometimes(depends on species as well); but if adults. Juveniles might cannibalize during molting periods. Some species have been known to canabalize with no molting involved. Be sure to add plenty of hides if you are going to take that risk.

Housing: Floor space is important If housing one a Kritter Keeper can be used I recommend a min of a 5 gallon for 2-3 scorpions and a ten for 5-8. They also like to burrow so a minimum of 3 inches of substrate is recommended. For hides just throw in rocks large enough to cover the scorpion they will make they're own burrow.

**I recommend feeding any scorpion randomly since they can go for long period of time without eating or simply fasting. Sometimes they may eat 2-3 times a week or just once a month. Do not worry if this happened it’s normal.

kool...i'm trying to do some communal set-up CS's or observations on the species i had it work with....i had 40 AA scorplings living together for a few months and though there was some success, the ones that matured faster starting cannibalizing the smaller ones... Crying or Very sad

That's great!  If you add some info on feeding (and watering?), it could form the basis of something we could hand out at the Bug Fair in May.

My basic rule on feeding any scorps is to do it randomly most wild caught vajeovids will eat right away and then eat very little there after. I'll will add that.

eddy, some vaejovids definitely dig burrows.  they do it in the wastelands, for sure.  the crazy thing is they dig them in fairly loose sand/dirt.  i suspect some kind of scorpion magic is coming into play

also, ifyou want you can cruise my photobucket for any pics you want to use. just give me cred somewhere and you can use them wherever you want

unfortunately my org is alitte funky. there are at least two primary places you canfind useful pics... in the scorpions directory... and i think there is a local directory

It seems my sivestrii one never made it to my email. Hmm I'll retype it. But I believe that the burrows that you see most vajovids in are previously dug burrows but I'll add that on. In captivity they prefer to hide under rocks.

i'm going to have to disagree. the burrows i find vaejovids in positively SCREAM scorpion burrow. they are horizontally oriented with an oval enterance with the long axis parallel to the ground. that is classic scorp burrow characteristics
sick4x4

could that also me considered a type of reptile characteristic as well..of coarse its a guess as i haven't seen said burrow or the type markings that would suggest either but if you could get a close up of the lateral serrations in the sand it probably can be solved ::lol::...

we should ask LKR

cool, i need to get take some notes on wasteland scorps. I've seen the burrows as well but have never founds scorps no matter how far I dig. I'll add it on anyways.
