So... i had a good occasion to think about venom pain a little while ago (http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/showthread.php?t=110188) and i realized that i have never gotten that "stinging" kind of pain from a centipede bite.
by stinging pain i mean a HIGHLY localized, acute sensation somewhat reminescent of extremely slowly driving a needle through the top few layers of your skin.
when i get bit by a centipede species that causes me pain rather than just swelling the pain has always, and only, been what i call "boneache". It feels like a severe sprain and typically is NOT localized at the bite site. The intense pain i have felt in my three bad bites (Ethmostigmus trigonopodus "african giant yellowleg", Scolopendra morsitans "blackheaded tanzanian tiger", and Scolopendra subspinipes ssp. "Thai Jewel") was in the wrist joint of the effected limb. Each bite caused moderately severe swelling in the affected limb... and either this swelling or the direct venom action causes a sort of grinding, strained feeling in the wrist joint. My finger joints in the affected limb felt a little sore (and were definitely swollen) but never really felt painful, per se. I had a little pain in the form of like, tissue tightness in the arm pit lymphnodes of the affected limb... but nothing compared to the boneache. An interesting note: when the yellowleg bit me the boneache focus felt like it was in my forearm... and the centipede bit me in the forearm. in both bad Scolopendra bites i was envenomated in the fingers and the boneache focused in my wrist. another intersting point is that i have never felt the boneache with any immediacy, considering the time of the bite. there has always been at least a 20 minute latency between the bite and any swelling... and a further 10-20 minute latency between onset of noticeable swelling and noticeable pain
i also talked to my brother (not on any of the boards) a little bit about his sting ray sting. he was stung in the ankle while at the beach and it sounds quite similar to the way a centipede bite sets in, to me. initially he thought he wasn't stung (though he did know something happened as he stepped on the fish and felt a whack on his ankle) and there was no problem. ~10-20 minutes later his ankle started to feel funny and he decided to get out of the water... then he saw he was not, in fact fine.
the sting left a large gash that was bleeding pretty freely. his foot started to swell and hurt.... then hurt BADLY. my brother is a pretty tough dude... i've seen him cut himself open badly enough to require stitches and not bat an eye... and he readily admitted that the sting ray sting had him crying like a small child with a bee sting. he said it was the most painful thing he had ever experienced. when we got down to specifics it turns out that his main complaint was.... a feeling like he had badly sprained or broken his ankle bones!
further, he said the only thing that brought any amount of relief was keeping his foot in a bucket of super hot water. i have found heat treating centipede bites also offers some relief.
anyhow... the point of this thread is to find out *HOW* it hurts *when* it hurts.... from centipede envenomations. Do you get the "bee sting"/stingy sensation? do you get the boneache? does your nose hurt? speak to me of your pain
What
The only noticeable effects I have had from pede bites(S. polymorpha and S. heros) is a sensation of heat and the occasional tingling in my lips... I have also noticed the heat sensation returning when further activity(rubbing or scratching) happens in the locale of the bite.
Thanks to our local vocab and grammar Nazi Pulk. "Pulk: kevin, it's "effects" not "affects"".

While we're on the general subject - you know what grinds my gears? When people use the word "specie" as the singular of "species" instead of just keeping it "species." Oh yeah, and those idiots who don't know how to merge on the interstate. And cooks who use too much garlic. And checkout persons who don't look you in the eye. And soccer.
