The green handles are from Walmart. I do not like the green handle containers as much because they are wide. I only got them because I had to house a couple of T's and target was out. I can not imagine why!  Rolling Eyes
Anyhow, I just drill holes on the sides and on top of the lids for ventilation.

Target!?!?! I can't imagine how I missed these before. I practically live at Target! I have some boxes I use now but especially liked to purple ones you have!!

Do you ever use a soldering iron for making air holes? If I have a lot to do I prefer it to drilling. The drill is heavy and sometimes I crack the plastic. The soldering iron stinks but I do it outside so it is tolerable.

As a side note for for our containers we have also labled most of our bins. Denise uses a basic name tag (Scientific name, common name, pet name), and on the scorpions I created a template for word that I merge with my feeding list of scorps to create labels. The labels I use have the scientific name, common name (if available), pet name (yes I name all of my scorps), and information regarding the scorpions venom strength, speed, and agressiveness, also basic care information such as temp and humidty range.

The left side of the closet is the scorps. I also track all feeding, moults, births, deaths, etc in an excel spreadsheet for reference. One of these days I'll get around to posting my templates for everyone.

No we just use the drill. At first I got cracking but now, I have drilling process down. The soldering gun is a good idea as well.  Very Happy

I don't have a soldering iron (probably one of the few things I *don't* have), so I just use a nail (of appropriate diameter) held with a pair of pliers over the flames on my gas range.  Once the nail is hot, I poke a couple of holes with it and reheat it a bit every couple of holes or so.  I also keep the stove vent fan running while I'm doing this so the stinky melting plastic smell gets sucked out.

(For all you po' folks out there like me who can't afford a soldering iron and need to improvise).

How do you guys keep these shelving units heated? I presume that you are not using heat mats for each and every tank/container?

HEllo,
I do own a Cautin is the spanish word for Soldering gun.
But I prefer using a nail and pliers just like Celeste.

I don't use or have a special device to heat my racks.
I just heat the tearrariums that need to be heated like my Corucias and Jungle carpets and the scorpions

The rest stays at room temp.

James,

I don't know about the others, but my reptile room is kept about 5-10 degrees hotter than the rest of the house at all times (and the rest of the house is never below 77 F).  So the inverts don't need additional heat.

Thats is the "poor man's" (or womans, sry...) rack system.. The smaller ones run about $12 ea. (sometimes Target has them on sale for $8.99) the larger ones are 110 qt, and they run about $18 ea. It really makes a unit semi affordable. The selving is from Home Depot, 2 diff modles same style..  The smaller (black) was $39, the white larger one was $49-$59 I believe.. These are a bit large for balls (height), but work great for Pituophis and Crots..

Cool. Thanks for the info. So what size do I need for an adult ball python like the one I am getting from you?

Well D, I believe the ones I use are 76 qt. (smaller ones), you can use them, I do when balls come in. But when I used to keep a collection of them, I used a shorter version I think they were 36-37 qt.??? Floor space is good, height isn't necessary. I chose Sterilite brand due to the latching lids, I like that security when not using melamine racks.. I would say look for a 36-42 qt. size tub with more floor space and less height..

Thanks Matt.

I basically have a wall that I could set up a rack that is no taller than 57 inches and the length is roughly over 60 inches.

So if I set something up similar to you-how do I provide heat?-the air temp is around 80.

Can you give a "homemade" but nice set-up scenario that meets the snakes requirements.
If you can add more photos of the behind the scenes of your racks and containers (inside and out), that would help me alot!

Show me the heating elements as well if you can.

Thanks for all the help!

No prob... Go to any Rite Aid (I go to K-Mart..) and buy heat pads, like for a sore back, they have a low, med and high setting. I keep mine on low.. Theyre cheaper than Zoo Med ones (around $13 ea.) and I duct tape them in the middle of each level, that way two tubs use one pad.. I also keep all my pads on a timer. They come on at 9 am and go off at 9 pm.... This seems to be the cheapest way.. I would use 6 inch heat tape and just roll it from one level to the next, but that stuff is getting harder to find and expensive... I will go take some more pics and post them in a new post.. Give me a couple minutes...

::lol::. I'm slowly working on it. When you get to a certain amount of cages, it's almost a necessity. ::lol::

Hey Bam,

I don;t know what yo are using to mark your containers (looks like sharpies), but as a suggestion I recommend using china markers, you can wipe them clean later, and they come in a variety of colors. (I saw this method being used by one of the forefathers of SCABIES and it seemed to work, since then I believe that is one of the better ways to go-aside from labels-)
