Looking for a young tortoise (not a baby ...big enough to fend for itself a bit) for a coworkers son.  SCABIES member, dealer, or local shop... recommendations appreciated.  Wink

Hello Steven,
try a Russian tortoise, they stay small and you will find mainly juveniles or adults available.

I will let you know if I find any.

might be a bit problematic...  they grow fast n'huge and are not native(could add to the complexity ...need a native probably... novice keepers it will be in the hands of)   ,,,but maybe im wrong.

Check with the Southwestern Herpetologists Society -- they may have tortoises available for adoption.  www.swhs.org

This may sound wacko, but if you check the local animal shelters they sometimes have "exotics" (birds, reptiles, etc.) as well.

Russians do stay on the smaller side and are pretty hardy (just read something on them this past week), I think Pet N Jungle had one, but you may want to check with hobbyists first.

Thanks fo r all the info guyz ...kinda lost in the "herp" world.

wow ...figured they were not a dime a doz, but a bit surprised with what they go for.  $$$  ...actually not that surprised...but... Laughing

Russians, sulcata and deserts ...seems they are the main species going round in the pet trade/rescues.   Am I correct in assuming that the Deserts are native (US) species?

Kid ...good father ...dont know the kid though ...anywho ... if you were to choose a specie, which?? And/or maybe I should be including land (Box) turtles in my investigation?

edit:hmmm.   nother specie...

here you go
http://www.tortoiseforum.org/thread-8378.html

also, if you have to choose just get the desert tortoise because they are native here.

Hello All,
I was told once that If I joined the Desert tortoise Society, I was able to adopt one of the CB babies from the group, is this veridic?

Do you need a permit to get WC or it also applies to CB individuals??

All desert torts require a permit & tag from F&G. But you can go through the Ca. Turtle & Tortoise Club for adoptions and tags.

Steven, if it's the last thing I ever do I will eventually train you to say "species" instead of "specie."

If you got them from the same state you don't need permit unless your going to send them to another state. I was offered a desert tortoise before and the person told me that. oh btw that only applys to CB Smile

Nope -- you have to have a permit to possess a Desert Tortoise in California.  That person who offerred you one was misinformed.  It is also illegal to breed them in captivity (but I think I've seen something about permits to do that -- check with the local Desert Tortoise Rescue groups or the DFG).
http://www.sdturtle.org/desert%20tortoise%20permits.htm
http://www.tortoise.org/general/permit.html
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/news/news04/04046.html

I can't find a permit application online, so it looks like you have to actually telephone the DFG to get one...  If you acquired the tortoise legitimately, there should be no problem getting a permit.  (It is illegal to remove them from the wild).  But contact one of the local Desert Tortoise rescue groups -- they always have tortoises available for adoption because it is also against the law to release them back into the wild (because of the possibility of spreading disease back into the dwindling wild population).  The California Desert Tortoise is an endangered species.

Going through the CTTC is much quicker, most of the time that is where F&G will send you anyway..

Yep ...awesome info ...i appreciate it very much.

Im thinking ill just pass on the info to the guy ...sounds like a native is the way to go...and looks like he would need to deal w/the paper work and whatnot anyway.

Id love to have one or two for my backyard when its finally stable ...but i fear the pool ...I suspect that there can be tortoise accidental drownings in a situation/layout like i have.  Then again...maybe they are smart enough to not fall in.   ??
