when i was at an pc bank/online gaming store/whatever i caught two of these things and stuck them on my shoulders and kept them on me for a couple hours. when i wanted to talk to them i would poke them and they would hiss at me.
i definitely thought it was much more amusing than a lot of the other ppl hehehe. i even went to get a soda with them on my shoulders _________________

I think your idea of wearing them around on your shoulder is fun and nice, but unfortunately people have been making jewelry out of beetles lately, adding rhinestones and stuff and wearing them around pinned to their shirts on little chains... See:

unless there's overharvesting involved, this isn't necessarily that bad. in some well-regarded scientific experiments bugs were tethered in place using hot wax as glue. the jewelry thing does (probably) prevent them from getting food, but there are -much- crueler things that could be done to them (especially considering these are the imagos)
And yes, many research papers are based on data that can sometimes involve mass killings or even 'mutilation' of the inverts involved. Not that big a deal. _________________ - Kevin aka What

To be honest, i think the beelte by itself looks better than the jewels they make out of them :-) I would find it original if i saw someone walking around with a live beetle on his shoulder . I would probably ignore someone walking around flashing his jewels made out of dead beetles.
Never the less, you guys are lucky to have such nice June Beeltes. The ones we have here are ugly, stupid, all brown, they can't fly properly and we even call them June BUGS around here ::lol::. They are simply everywhere around human buildings especialy at night . Also most of the time , you will see them bumping their heads on the walls of your house at night as if they had no idea what to do ::lol::. And in the morning when you go outside , you will find a whole bunch of them laying lifeless on the ground or in your pool.
So only 3 words to describe those guys over here in canada. : Stupid, ugly, annoying.
now don't get me wrong though, i'm like you and i like insects as much as you all do. I wouldn't kill those Beetles just cuz they're ugly . It would be unnecessary to kill them anyways since they only live for a night or so ::lol::.
Whenever they fall on their back, they can't get back on their legs by themselves. If i decide to help him out and put him back on his legs, he will simply go and try to climb on something again and then fall on it's back again and die anyway. I don't even know if it's possible for them to live for more than a day or two.
If you guys want i guess i could recharge my camera's battery and post a few pictures of them here.
I won't if i don't get any requests for it though since they are of no interest for me .

Yeah, we've got plenty of them. I swear the stupid things purposely fly in my hair at night when I walk my dogs. Sorry but I hate the brown ones! _________________ Jules
I saw one of those brown ones while i was at work about 2-3 days ago and i hapenned to have my camera with me so i took it's picture just so you guys can tell me if it's the same one you have in california.
i also took pics of some other beetles we have here . Those are all black and they are not as fat as the brown ones. I do now know the species though . I've never done any research on beetles.
the first two pictures are of 1 specimen and the other pictures are of a second specimen. The first one was about twice as big as the second one but i think they are both of the same species. The first one is probably just older
It *looks* like the little brown ones we have here, but it looks like we have about four major Genuses: Serica alternata, Phobetus comatus, Parathyce palpalis, and Cyclocephala sp.
