If you're ever in San Diego and need a place to go hunt on your lunch break, then I suggest Los Penaquitos Canyon.
There are two entrances. One is off the 15 on Mercy Rd. and there is a fee to park. The other is off the 805 on Sorrento Valley Blvd. and is free. I suggest the latter.
This is generally an out and back hike with a waterfall at the end. Its about 3 miles out to the falls and 3 miles back. Its not much of a waterfall though, so don't get your hopes up.
I mostly come here for the snakes, but recently I've noticed a lot of invert activity. So far I've found California Striped Racers, Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes, and California Kingsnakes of various morphs. There are a couple different scorpion species (A. pococki and Pseudouroctonus sp.) and trapdoor spiders (B. californicum) are plentiful. I haven't found any tarantulas here though.
This place is generally pretty crowded with hikers and mountain bikers. Also, keep in mind that collecting here is prohibited and rangers DO frequent the area in trucks and on foot.
Thanks, I didn't even realize they burrowed so nicely.
You will learn in time, Grasshopper!!!!! _________________ “Look down at me and you see a fool;
