Finally ...ok sorry, kept forgetting to snap some shots of the roaches Andrew re-discovered in our "wastelands".  I actually uncovered them cause I have wanted to lift a big, weird rectangle of caste cement thing...way too heavy for me to desire the trouble of getting it into my vehicle alone ...but at last! finally a sucker out there with me to help maneuver the beast!   Wink  Very Happy  Under it and surrounding is VERY fine sand ...that lovely wastelands gray stuff, but even more fine.  Thats where Andrew found the colony.  I bet if we would have dug up the entire area of substrate under the "stone" and put it all into a bucket..we'd have caught many more.
The larger are about a half inch and the nymphs are about a 1/4"
Im not sure how many we got ...I could find a few in the sand, but they are very well hidden.  ...even after dumping them into a larger white tray and carefully sifting around, I only confirmed we caught 4 nymphs ...there has to be more though.

Ok.. now for my new pede!  ...named it Striper! Very Happy

i think we found the two larger ones and about five of the like, tictac or smaller sized ones

which is more than scabies has found total, previously, i think

i think the main reason we found so many is that we started er, feathering the sand with our fingers.... these dudes are almost always not apparent on the surface of the sand beneath structures

i was seeing ifi could follow what might have been a scorp burrow in the sand with my fingers and uncovered the first bug and then after i got done making joyful noises steven is like, (with my valley boy spin) "Dude! keep digging! i bet you can find more".... whew! what a rush!   and this time we have a paper telling us how some scientist type kept his alive Very Happy

and i really hope steven and i can make our two stripeless tigers that came from the wastelands.... though my Nuprin (you know, "little, yellow, different") is almost certainly not sexually mature yet.  incidentily i have had nuprin for about two years now Smile http://www.atshq.org/forum/showthread.php?t=9214&highlight=nuprin

Do we??   Shocked  Very Happy  Ok, well.. i'll need that then.  Wink

These, like the "sand roaches" I collected from the islands are totally subterranean, but unlike the island ones, they are not highly active and they blend in to the dirt ...well..like chunks of dirt.  Not that im comparing species, cause these are a world apart when it comes to roaches.
Well, anyway ...I can see screwing this up ...very easily.   Then again! Maybe they are really tough and things like feeding/H2O just need to be highly regulated and all will work out.

What do you think these are feeding on out in the wastelands?
Im gonna guess certain types of roots, dead inverts and occasionally maybe dead verts.   ??

Are all roaches omnivorous? I was under the assumption they would "help" with dead inverts/verts and would also eat plant matter.

Were there any dead animals/insects were they were found?
Were you able to bring home soil/sand/dirt they were found in?

If they were found next to/ or by a scorp burrow I would guess their diet partly consists of remains from the scorps meals.

No sign of food ...but all the other beetles, earwigs, millis, etc...that reside out there.. they all gotta eat too and you have to figure whatever they are eating these roaches must be eating.

Sand from the wastelands is iffy ...at least thats how I treat it.  Many years of dumping there...airport and other industry nearby ...gotta figure theres a good chance the ground is contaminated with whatnot ...who knows.?  So... i tend to avoid bringing stuff back with it ...or at least I dont rely on it nor keep bugs in it.  Wink

Hello All,
Steven and ANdrew those roaches a great find, I need to get me some of them.

I think they are in they are Arenivaga sp

If so the adult females are wingless 12mm. The adult males have wings 20-30mm

These kind of roaches feed on detritus and dead animal stuff. They come out to the surface to feed. They are crepuscular and nocturnal. They are really good diggers, if disturbed they will disappear in the sand.

I love this roaches, since the adult females resemble beetles. Nice roaches no doubt. Great find guys.

Here is a good link of what I think they are.

Scroll down till you find them.

that arenivaga is what i thought they were too, when i found them earlier... don't really remember what exactly made me think of that ID

however, when i killed one from keeping it in too moist of a container and it bloated up like a freaking water ballon i took it as highly indicative that it was a water-from-air species =P

there is a A. species known/collected from Riverside county so it is not a big stretch to expect it in San Bernardino county.  there should be a couple threads i started researching on around here somewhere

the largest specimen i collected a couple years ago had an amazing brick/sunset red color to it when i washed the sand off =P

The big chunk of cement we found them under is right next to a pile of the loose sand and broken cinderblock/bricks/rocks ...i haveta guess that more could be found.  I say we screen the sand for them ...like panning for gold.

BTW heads up if you plan on visiting the wastelands ...Beware of pregnant pitbull.  (Andrew, now her name is stuck on the tip of my tongue... do you recall? ) Shes mostly cool but will scope you out and has been known to bite.
