There may be people who like centipedes. I have seen people handling tarantulas and scorpions, but never a centipede handler. I would regard such a person with deep suspicion...Now what sort of man or woman or monster would stroke a centipede on its underbelly "And here is my big good centipede." If such a man exists, I say kill him without more ado. He is a traitor to the human race.

Here you go Andrew start filling stuff in... Very Happy

Habitat:

Coastal Dunes (pictures are in Monterey, CA)

[Probable] Prey items:

Eleodes sp? "Sand Dune Darkling Beetle"

See Kevin's (aka What's) thread for A. simus prey items (found all but the Lutica while there)

Other prey items (saw a lot):

small wolf spiders, firebrats, beetle larvae, etc. Even found a dead, abdomenless Apto in another Apto's burrow

Specimens of A. atomarius:

tiny sling found wandering in open:

juvenile in burrow:

Adult female: (note the color change from juve to maturity)

I do not have any good pics of the burrows I uprooted but the majority of them were shaped like a " Y ".

I found an adult female with spiderlings and she had at least 4 chambers going. The burrow slid down the dune when I accidentally dug out the base, it looked like a sand octopus!
