You like languages, too, Habibi? Which languages do you speak? I speak English, Spanish, some Russian, Mandarin Chinese, French, Japanese, and a little German and Burmese (we lived in Burma for a year when I was a kid, so of course I learned all the swear words!) With babelfish I can fake a lot more. I'm also fluent in "Dog". ;-)
I'd like to become more fluent in Japanese; am currently trying to learn Welsh, and also pick up a few words of Korean (because there are a lot of Koreans in our neighborhood and I shop at a local Korean market a lot); and have wanted to learn Arabic, Swahili, Hebrew, and Sanskrit for a long time. I'd also like to learn one of the major languages spoken in India, because I love Indian "Bollywood" movies. Cantonese might be useful around here as well.
I can read Russian, Greek, and a little Chinese, Japanese, and Hebrew. (Oh, and English, Spanish, French, etc., too of course).
My son seems to have a bit of a knack for languages as well. I'm trying to sneak a little Spanish and Japanese into his vocabulary.
BTW: among the Poecilotheria tarantulas, the females are much prettier than the males! The males are mostly dull and plain, while the females have brighter colors and prettier patterns (in general). But that's O.K. -- let the male Pamphobeteus be "prettier". It just means they have to compete for the females, and the females get to pick and choose! ;-) _________________ "Tarantulas are friends, not food" (but I bet they taste pretty good with butter and lemon!)
Japanese huh? Well I have you know that my favorite Korean singer of all time BoA speaks and sings in Japanese.
I have a feeling you're gonna love this site to death. I actually know more Korean then I do Spanish. But I love Spanish music ( Selena anyone? I ♥ her to death ). Most of my Spanish comes from listening to Spanish music same thing goes with Japanese. Korean is the only exception.
English is obvious. XD So you wanna know some Korean huh? Here you go:
안녕하세요 - Annyong ha seyo Hello
안녕히 가세요 - Annyong i ga seyo Goodbye
감사합니다 - Kamsamnida Thank you
천만해요 - Chomaneyo Your Welcome
사랑해 - Sarang Hae I love you
If you wanna know more let me know. I wanna learn it so bad but I also want a good source that I can rely on and that makes it easy and fun. I know I'll find one in the end but it's the looking and the waiting that's killing me. XD
But it's good to know that I'm not the only one who's crazy about languages and writing systems. You'll also notice on the site mentioned above that there's a section for "conscripts" well that's the term that's used for scripts made up by people for fun for their fantasy worlds etc.
Don't tell me you've never heard of J.R.R Tolkien?! And I also do this too because it's fun. But enough rambling cause I could go on forever.
Also you said you read Japanese? How many Kanji do you know?
And it's good to know that they're colorful female tarantulas out there too. I knew that there had to be or it wouldn't be right. XD
I read (and write) hiragana, but not yet katakana, and know probably a few dozen kanji from when I took Chinese in college. (They "borrowed" them from Chinese, so except for a few modifiers the Japanese added for parts of speech the Chinese don't have, the kanji are the same. Ditto for other Chinese dialects such as Cantonese).
Yes, I have a book about Quenya and Sindarin. There are some good online sources for those as well. Got started on Quenya but got sidetracked onto Welsh... (Quenya would probably be easier!)
I'm sure there must be Korean lessons online somewhere! :-)
Please post the link you were talking about above! :-) _________________ "Tarantulas are friends, not food" (but I bet they taste pretty good with butter and lemon!)
One of my favorite authors is Robert K. Tannenbaum and a major recurring character in his series of books is Lucy Carp, a linguistic genius who, as of the last book, spoke something like 75 languages. Very interesting for fans of the spoken word. _________________ "I hold your opinion above all others, tribe elder." - Neshan W. Sarkisian
I have CDO. It's like OCD, but the letters are in alphabetical order, like they should be.
No the link is in there. Just click on the word 'this' in "I think you're gonna love this site to death"
But here it is anyway: Clicky! And you have a book on Quenya and Sindarin?!! I have yet to get one. What's the title the author if it's not by Tolkien himself?
Who ever knows 75 languages is a freaking genius. I'm going to look into that book.

Actually, it's a series of about 21 books. Lucy isn't even born until book three or four. They're all good though. _________________ "I hold your opinion above all others, tribe elder." - Neshan W. Sarkisian

OMG! Habibi: thank you for that link! That's an *incredible* site!!! (I can see I'm going to be spending a lot of precious sleep time on that one!)
The book I have is "The Languages of Tolkien's Middle-earth" by Ruth S. Noel. But reviewers on Amazon.com claim it is full of errors and you are better off going to the Ardalambion site instead:

Dang! I wish there were more hours in the day!!! _________________ "Tarantulas are friends, not food" (but I bet they taste pretty good with butter and lemon!)
I know! It's one of my favorites on languages, fictional and real. And I too wish that there were more hours in the day.
I think we all do for some reason or another. And I'll look into the 21 books. My goodness how many series will I be reading in a life time then? First there's Harry Potter, then the Spiderwick Chronicles......Yes I know I'm a bookworm.
I speak a bit of Hindi and Punjabi. Punjabi is a lot like Hindi, but many words are different. When you start getting to other languages of India, Punjabi is the most like Hindi. The others are pretty much their own full languages. Most provinces south of Bengali, Gujurati, Kannadi, Malayali, Telugu, and literally about a hundred others. FYI, they talk faster the farther south you go. I love Indian music, movies, and of course the food! A lot of the words I know are different foods and ingredients. If anybody likes Indian movies, I can recommend some. Warning, dancing and singing are a part of every single Bollywood film. Some songs are good, some are bad, some are happy, some are sad.
I've been wanting to get into Sanskrit, Thai, and a few Indonesian/Malayan languages as I see myself traveling there at some point in my life. Some of the weirdest animals in the world are lost in Indonesia
Yes!!! Please send Bollywood recommendations! I *LOVE* the singing and dancing.
I have: "Lagaan", "Ashoka", and "Slumdog Millionaire" on video or DVD (not nearly enough!) I go into an Indian store in Duarte once in a while and of course they have a huge selection of movies. But I have no way of knowing which ones are good.
Send recommendations! Please! :-)
So Hindi would be the best language to study to follow Bollywood movies? (Yeah -- like I have time to add "learn Hindi" to my "to do" list right now!) _________________ "Tarantulas are friends, not food" (but I bet they taste pretty good with butter and lemon!)

There are some great actors, the best of all time being Amitabh Bachchan.
One of the my favorite Amitabh movies is Kaante, filmed here in Los Angeles, also starring another of my favs, Sanjay Dutt. This movie is about Amitabh and Sanjay and 2 others setting up a big bank heist.
One of the most famous (and some consider overrated) is Shahrukh Khan. I have 2 good movies with him in it, older movies too. The first one is Devdas. Starring Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai (you will become familiar with these names ). I haven't actually seen it, but it was an instant classic I've heard.
The next is Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. This is a story that spans from India to England about 2 brothers separated when they were young, and then the younger brother (Hrithik Roshan) reuniting with the older brother (Shahrukh Khan), and then reuniting with their parents, whom their father cast out of the family for choosing love and not an arranged marriage. It is one of the only movies that makes me cry every time I watch it.
If you want some action, there's a good movie starring Ajay Devgan, called Khakhee. Where Ajay is a terrorist that is being hunted by Akshay Kumar. Also starring Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai.
There are a few good options as far as comedy goes. There is Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.. Starring Sanjay Dutt, he is a thug that was informed that his father who he hadn't seen since he was sent off to college in Mumbai to become a doctor. Sanjay and friends make up a run down hospital to resemble a fully working hospital that Sanjay is a doctor in, so that he will impress his father and not be ashamed that he was instead a thug.
The sequel (tho completely unrelated) to Munna Bhai is Lage Raho Munna Bhai. This one is not so funny, but is good spirited. Definitely worth checking out. Sanjay Dutt is a radio host that is being assisted by the ghost of his father (or mentor, can't remember).
Another comedy that has become quite famous is Singh is Kinng. Starring Akshay Kumar, his is a huge hearted clumsy klutz. Starting in Indian and travelling to Sydney Australia. Can't remember too much of the story, but it involves a house owned by a gang, and hiding gang activity to visiting parents. If you watch until the end, our very own Snoop Dogg has a music video with Akshay Kumar and RDB (Rhythm Dhol and Bass, Punjabi DJ's from England).
Another of my favorite movies is Dil Se. A love story with Shahrukh Khan, as are all of his movies.
A very sad movie that is mostly in english, starring Kal Penn from Harold and Kumar, is The Namesake. This is a movie that spans a generation, starting with the struggle of a new young couple that moves to New York, has 2 kids, kids grow up and the older son (Kal Penn) marries a modern indian women whom he soon divorces. This movie is a real tear jerker, and a great performance by Kal Penn. If you thought Harold and Kumar were too childish, you will have a newfound respect for Kal Penn after watching this movie. Kal Penn has another Indian movie coming out soon called Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain
This is all just off the top of my head. I left all my indian friends and family when I moved down here to Torrance, so I've been kind of out of the loop on Bollywood. If you can find a little Indian grociery store, they usually have a movies section and you can usually find 2 or 3 movies in one DVD. Or if you're like me, finding places to download them online can be easier than hunting down indian stores. Or they may be available from Amazon or eBay on DVD.

Oh and the biggest Indian movies are all in Hindi. There are movies that are more regional, but Hindi is the most widely understood. I've tried to speak Hindi with Gujurati ppl and they can't understand a thing I say. And then they tell me how they say it, and I get confused as to how they didn't understand me. and FYI, all tech support in India is in Gujurat. So knowing Hindi may not be too helpful if you are calling tech support in India. But it will make movies better.
Thank you, "pj"! Those ought to keep me occupied for a while! _________________ "Tarantulas are friends, not food" (but I bet they taste pretty good with butter and lemon!)
I added a movie to my first post. I realized I was talking about KKKG not Devdas.
Here are some other movies I have downloaded, but haven't watched yet.
Jab We Met starring Kareena Kapoor.
Omkara starring Ajay Devgan and Kareena Kapoor. Ajay Devgan rocks in every movie he's in.
Sholay is an older movie from 1975 starring the great Amitabh Bachchan. Came highly recommended to me.
Veer Zaara. Starring Shahrukh Khan, Preity Zinta, and Rani Mukherjee. This is another one everybody loves.
Zakhm is another movie with Ajay Devgan.
Soon you will find everybody has their voices dubbed for the singing. Everybody except for Amitabh Bachchan, he does all his own singing, cause he's badass like that.
Enjoy!
