S.C.A.B.I.E.S.

Southern California Arachnid, Bug, Invertebrate, Etomological Society

Scabies sort of congealed into existance early in 2007. What started as a few like-minded bug people getting together to hike and hunt for bugs has grown into a group of over 30 people who get together for invertebrate and herpetoculture shows, enjoy social events, and even do "bug deals" in which the group gets together to bulk purchase inverts at *very* nice prices.

The future of SCABIES is looking bright. We are going to be organizing a Bar-Bug-Que which will be a combination bbq, potluck, and bug show-and-tell (and swap?). We are looking into having bug show-and-tells at local petstores and nature centers. Eventually we would like to field a candidate for President of the United States of America, on the pro-bug ticket.

The SCABIES forum is intended to futher the pursuits of observation, collection, and propogation of native USA invertebrates, especially those of Southern California.  The rest of this thread will concentrate on explaining how to best use the SCABIES forum to achieve these goals.

First, a brief explanation of the layout of the forums. Since the major mission of the forum is regarding NATIVE USA/California species the bulk of the forums are intended to be populated with threads mostly about native species. There are already PLENTY of other forums dealing with the invert hobby... we don't want to directly compete with them... rather, the Itch should be a supplement to the existing forums. The General forum contains rules, announcements, and a comment forum.  Meet the Meat governs all the aspects of SCABIES in which members meet with each other or other people.

A quick summary of what is appropriate to each section is as follows:
General
Myriapods - centipedes, millipedes, symphala, etc
Scorpions - eight legs and a stinger!
Tarantulas & Primitive Spiders - tarantulas, trap/folding door spiders, funnelwebs, etc. Mesothelae included here
Other Spiders & Arachnids- true spiders, (tailless) whip scorpions, sun spiders (solifugids), ticks & mites, etc
Insects & Other Invertebrates - six legs and three body parts;  worms, snails, planarians, sponges, animals without (back) bones
Bone Things - herps, bears, birds, etc
Plant Things - trees, grass, herbs, shrubs, fungus, mold, etc
Meet the Meat - arrange future and see past events here
The Wild Hunt - arrange future and see past hunts here

There are two "secret" forums.  The core ~30 SCABIES members are granted free access, by virtue of being involved in the group from the beginning.  All new scabies comers have to "earn" their way in. The first secret forum is
"Deal Me In!" - This forum is where we arrange all our group deals. SCABIES has twice so far pooled our money to purchase a group of spiderlings at prices FAR better than any individual could ever have gotten!  We keep this forum secret as we do not think that the whole world needs to see our private sort of financial dealings Smile To gain access to this forum a SCABIES officer must meet, or at least vouch, for you.
"Locale Color" - This forum holds very specific directions to locales known to contain various "big game" species, or species of interest.  Due to the risk of over collecting this forum is probably best kept secret.  "Haunts" is the forum that will show pictures of a location... "Locale Color" might actually tel you how to get there or show a map!  To gain access, you must provide a locale and "proof" of the game species that live there, to be posted to LC.

a new forum has been created and a general reorganization and house cleaning is going to be done to the Itch in general

originally the scabies "family" was basically a bunch of dudes of verying degrees of craziness... all (or most) of adult age.  scabies has since grown into a sort of full service site with users that are underage perhaps browsers that are even younger still.

in an effort to make the site as useful as possible to everyone... and avoid any future legal headaches we have created.... David and Neshan's Naughty Burrow!  Southern California's first adults only bug oriented forum!  you must join the adults user group (which staff has to do for you) to access David and Nesh's Naughty Burrow!
