Just a quik quiz question to see if anyone knows this story. It's very common. Everyone has heard it. But - almost nobody pays attention to the story or knows what many of the words in the story mean. Here's the gist of the tale:

A guy was camping near a pond and a sheep came up to him. He wanted to eat the sheep so he grabbed it. The local law enforcement came and tried to arrest him for stealing the sheep. Rather than be taken in for the crime he drowned himself in the pond and haunted the place for ever after.
The end.

What is this story better known as?

Close, but no cigar. It isn't Swan Lake either.

Nope. I was kidding about R&J being close. Not even.

I googled it, so I won't give the answer away, but I will say that I don't believe I've heard this story before today.

That's pretty cool. I'm surprised that Google helped. Most of the key words are different than the ones I used. I'll post the answer in a day or so if nobody guesses it.

OK Gang, here's the answer: It's the unofficial national anthem of Australia.

Waltzing Matilda

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
under the shade of a coolibah tree and he
sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled
You'll come a waltzing Ma-til-da with me

chorus: Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda,
you'll come a waltzing Ma-til-da with me and he
sang as watched and waited till his billy boiled
you'll come a waltzing Matilda with me

Down came a jumbuck to drink at the water-hole
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee
And he sang as he stowed that jumpbuck in his tucker bag
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me

Down came the Squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred
Down came the troopers, one , two and three
Whose is that jumbuck you've got in ya tucker-bag?
You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me

But the swagman he up and jumped in the water-hole
Drowning himself by the coolibah tree
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by the billabong
Who'll come a waltzing Matilda with me
