seeing abyss' link to mat's CA scorp work made me think... we could probably do write ups for each county (to start) and refine them to city level (MUCH more difficult and would probably involve like, original scabies field research!) detailign what big game bugs can be found
there is teh CA myg page from that berkeley dude.
giant centipedes from Shelley's site and book
maybe i will try to do the basics for LA and San Berdo tonight/soonish and see what a skeleton version does for the group?

one thing i would like to like, clarify. i don't want these to be an exhaustive list of everything (well, giant centipedes, scorps, and mygalos can be exhaustive... but true spiders... that would be a leeetle bit excessive =P )
i really want to cover the "cool" stuff. basically... i want to cover the stuff we hunt for. so... cool true spiders, but not every single little orb weaver in the county
i will make a spreadsheet to automagically produce google image and text searches for each species of interest. eventually i would like to have links to a species thread on here for each species of interest. if people would like to help they can make species threads for species that they find interesting.remember, threads about how to catch or natural habitat should be made on the "in situ" side while threads for the captive care should be on the other side
sidenote: my cursed fingers keep typing countRy instead of county. please do point out any of my typos like that =P
eventually i might make a webpage for each County Guide. that way i can make tables and all that sort of geeky stuff =P it will really make the layout and information transfer much smoother and easier
I may be starting a website soon called Sonoma County Insects which will list all the bugs I find around here. Might create a database where people can enter info about bugs they found too.
i would be interested in seeing what software you use. right now i have a couple spreadsheets and posts and that is about it
one of the things i would like to be able to do (as i have discussed previously with some scabies when hunting) is to compile all our field trip reports and get a sort of monthly look at how many and what we catch. i have a feeling some stuff is quite seasonal. for instance... in close to three years of hunting the wastelands i/we found all of ~three legless lizards... then we went when it was quite cool and found five in one day! (note: i don't keep those. don't do wc bonethings... except my kitty). i suspect some interesting info can be gleaned from our data after a while _________________

There may be people who like centipedes. I have seen people handling tarantulas and scorpions, but never a centipede handler. I would regard such a person with deep suspicion...Now what sort of man or woman or monster would stroke a centipede on its underbelly "And here is my big good centipede." If such a man exists, I say kill him without more ado. He is a traitor to the human race.
hey,
great idea.
Sorry, I canīt help making such a list, but in Germany we already have such a system. Several aracnologists do regular field trips, catch spiders, and ID them. Then those information are collected at a database and tranferred into maps, showing the statistical distribution of all registered species for each German state.
Can be found here: www.spiderling.de (unfortunately only available in German. The link to the maps: http://www.spiderling.de/arages/index2.htm) _________________ Regards,

that gives me a good idea though... i bet there are ~local organizations in CA that do *something* similar
i know the Los Angeles Natural History Museum was doing a spider survey. i think it might be ongoing. could be interesting to look up what they plan to do with the data _________________

hi,
thatīs why I posted that link, I think such a project can be established everywhere where you have enough person working on it. It takes some time, but will be worth it.
Iīm probably not the typical German ^^
If you had seen my desk before my gf "reorganized" it while I was at university you would have gone mad... Now I donīt find anything, probably need at least a little bit mess (only the real genius overviews the chaos ^^). _________________ Regards,
